Guys and Gals, Hello!

I need to remove the plastic heater and air control from my '59 Imperial. It's way up in the dash, and the manual is very short on information, except that the switch comes out with the entire retaining bracket. What I cannot figure out is how to access and remove the clamp that holds the water cable in place. Has anyone done this job that can enlighten me a bit before I tear up something trying to teach myself? Any help is appreciated!

Best,

Rex

thanks so much for this post. Everything is helpful you have sent, but I am just trying to decide the best steps in removing the vacuum switch assembly. There are lots of wires behind it and the fuse panel below it and no obvious way to reach the screw that secures the bowden cable for the water valve. The assembly is also rather wedged up into the right side of the dash so that it seems almost stuck there. I did not have the a/c service manual so that is very helpful. I appreciate your help!

I think that the vacuum switch is PN 1842 505 heater control switch and was used across the board (P,D,Des,C,Imp) in 1959.

A 1842 505 looks like this:

From what I can see from the diagram that I posted, there is probably a set screw that holds the heater temp knob to the lever. If you remove the temp knob and the two screws that hold the panel to the dash structure, the face plate will be able to be pulled towards you and the entire control assembly (switch and bracket) will likely be able to be pushed back, towards the firewall. That might expose the two screws that hold the vacuum switch to the bracket and also the clamp that holds the Bowden cable to to the bracket. It all went together so it there has to be a way to disassemble it. (Knowing that the dash was a sub-assembly that was put-together away from the actual car assembly line - it still had to be put together).

Sorry, I hope that somebody else chimes in. You might have to make friends with the Imperial club (??)

56 D,

Thanks so much for your help. It may be possible to pull the assembly back far enough to access the two retaining screws. The problem is that you can only see the upper portion of the assembly and it is stuck pretty tight into the dash. If I knew a mechanically inclined five-year-old, it would be an easy job for such a person! Being stout and big-handed does not help with this job! Your references have been most helpful!! Thanks again!

Man, wish I had the solution of this problem. Process of replacing needs too much attention and time. I remember my first time replacing that stuff, and I couldn't remove the plastic heater without damage. There are a lot of nuances, and yes, there is no answers in the manual. So, personally my recommendation, contact the professionals.

To be honest, I don't understand anything about air conditioners at all. Of course, I tried to figure it out myself, but each time I only made it worse. Although everything is simple in the drawings. I don't understand why this is so.

As I said, you should contact professionals. This problem requires qualitative service bc it has a lot of nuances that must be considered. Once I've had the similar problem, when the AC vents in my BMW M5 didn't work. I spent hours every day in my car suffering from unbearable heat. That is always like a hell to me, when air conditioning is out of service. The same situation happened to me when i moved to Singapore. I almost fainted when I spent a couple of hours in a stuffy room without conditioning. I set AC all over my house and now I enjoy this sweet coolness even when outside weather leaves much to be desired. I try to maintain my AC in the best condition.
