My late father bought this car back in 1992 and never got to this project.
The previous owner installed a 331 hemi from a 55 imperial since the 315 hemi threw a rod.
Virgin original everywhere else, even all the paint and the rust out.
This 331 elephant barely fits under the hood.
All indicators show that the 65K on the odometer is correct and then they blew the engine and parked in a field or something for nearly 30 years.
I know it's been off the road for a VERY long time 40- 50 years.

Dan: Thanks for posting the photos of your car. That 331 is really shoe-horned in there.

Did they happen to keep the D500 315 block? I would be curious to see what the engine number was.

Based on this table of the D500 engine numbers that I have been keeping track of, I would guess between D500-5600 and D500-6000.

Dad and I sold all those parts on Ebay about 20 years ago.
When we bought it the original engine was in pieces, stuffed into the trunk.
We found all the engine except one rod and piston assemble. (broken and discarded we assume)
The new engine number is CE553999

Too bad the engine is gone.

Based on these VINs and D500 engine numbers and your my guess of between D500-5600 and -6000 was pretty good. Now I would obviously have to say somewhere around D500-5590

35125652 5579

35127428 5604

But we will never know

Have you checked out your brakes and rear leaf springs?

Brakes should be the 12" x 2.5" Chrysler brakes. You might have 6 leaves in the rear springs (but I would guess 5 like mine).

Just did the brakes and the springs.
The brakes are 12 inch and the springs are 6 leaf.... and no longer broken.
I found out today that the spare has the wrong rim and wont fit over the 12" drums.
It may have been from the parts car that was NOT a D500 and had 10" drums.
Anyone have a source or something that I can look for in a spare rim?

The wheels on the 56 Dodge D500s were 15 x 5.5" wide. Their Part Number (PN) was PN 1635 360 and they were also used on the 55 and 56 cars (but not the wagon) Chryslers (including the 55 Chrysler 300) and
shared with the 1956 P29 Fury. So you should be able to find on. 5 x 4.5" bolt circle unless your's is a hard core D500 with 5 x 5.5" bolt circle (= Imperials)

Nathan (Powerflite) who put a Chrylser hemi in his 56 Plymouth will know better that I will but I guess the "shoe-horning" issue is more likely to be related to the engine width (and clearance of the exhaust manifolds, etc) than length.

The block length of a 331 was 21.78" and the block length of a 315 D500 engine was/is 20.844", so less than an inch difference. I don't have any engine width info (none jumping out at me from Willem Weertmann's book).

In order to put the Chrysler hemi in there with the stock manifolds, you have to jack up the front of the motor like you have it. By using headers, you can bring it back down to where it belongs. I started with shorty headers, but ended up making a custom set of full length headers in order to get the exhaust above the steering. It was a lot of work, but well worth it in the end. Here is a link to my '56 Savoy with a 331 hemi in it. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=57904&...

Here is an update of the D500 after a summer's worth of work on it.
I will add more photos of the engine bay and interior when I take them.

Custom royal trim is from the parts car.
I may put some of the parts up for sale later.
I still need to re-chrome the custom royal taillights.
Anyone know a home chroming kit that is reasonable and actually works?
