When I first got my car in September 2016, I had it checked over by a local repair shop. While they tried to start it (after maybe 10 years of not being started), the water pump "calved" (puked coolant on their floor) and they told me to come and get the car (they couldn't source a new water pump).

So the car was towed home and left for me to figure out. I was lucky enough to find a NOS water pump from my local NOS Mopar parts guy. I was happy. I did nothing to the pump before I installed it.

In the last year I started to notice that the rad was losing coolant but there were no real noticeable leaks. I eventually figured out that there was one leak at the heater core (now fixed) and another at the water pump (based on coolant ponding on the front cross member). I chose to ignore that for awhile but naturally, the water pump leak didn't cure itself and has gotten worse.

Somewhere along the line (between 2016 and 2020), I found and purchased another NOS water pump and put it on the shelf for future use.

The final straw to prompt me to change the water pump is apparently it is now leaking enough to drip onto the double fan belts and get thrown laterally onto the inner fender liner and the very upper inside lip of the fender (which I had just painted). So....

Dug out the second NOS water pump and mentally preparing for the job. Then I thought, "I wonder whether there is something that I should do to this pump so it doesn't soon leak?"

I am thinking that soaking it overnight in a solution of 50/50 water/antifreeze might help to condition the pump seal(s)?

Anything else that I could/should do?

Good morning Dave. Phone Roko in Vernon. They rebuild them. I had mine rebuilt by Roko and it is good. They should be able to help.

Normally there's no proceduren to follow. You just might be unlucky ( "if it wasn't for bad luck I would'nt have no luck at all" Born under a bad Sign) and the seal was damage or some residue ended up in the seal Dave.

Del: Thanks. I just gave them a call. They didn't want to give me a price without seeing/disassembling the pump so I will contact you offline (via email)

Sven: Before I install this second NOS pump, I will flush the system to hopefully eliminate any debris. I installed a flushing "Tee" in one of the heater hose lines when I redid my heater valve and heater core recently.

I am also going to soak the NOS pump just for fun anyway.

You might want to fill the cooling system with some citric acid, maybe a couple of times if the rust is bad. Flush and neutralize with baking soda.

I would suggest that you verify that the gasket isn't leaking. These pumps should last for a while (decades). The paper gasket may have had a slight buckle, which has caused the gasket to eventually disintegrate (they're paper after all).

So my advice is to remove the pump, clean the surface on both the pump and the block. Then obtain a fresh gasket. Put some Permatex Ultra Black on the water pump mating surface and on the block's mating surface. Place new gasket on water pump and immediately attach to block. Torque bolts to about 30 ft/lbs and let dry overnight.

Thanks. Pretty sure that the gasket (and blue RTV) was fine but I could be wrong.

This is what I found when I removed the pump.

As a rule, I always start with the simplest solution. It takes minimal cost/effort to clean both surfaces and mount a fresh gasket. Then test it out. I wouldn't automatically assume that the streaking means a bad pump.

In this case you can (assume that the streaking means a bad pump). In the end, I could see it dripping from the weep hole with the engine running before I removed the pump.

The new NOS pump will be installed with a fresh gasket (that I made from the FelPro blue gasket material) on fresh smooth pump face and scraped clean pump manifold opening.

This looks just like my pump Dave. I had an original pump with a grease zerk on it but had to send it in as a core to get a rebuilt pump back in 2010. It only cost $67 then. I think they are a lot more expensive now and I'd like to be able to buy a spare but have not seen any in a long time.
