On my very first entry...Glad I found you guys. I am building a street rod my Dad and I started 50 years ago. I have kept this truck near me the whole time. and now is the time to finish it. I named it "Billy Frank" after my Dad. It`s a 1940 Corbitt truck cab, (looks like a big `32 Ford pickup), on a 56 Chrysler New Yorker frame. I have a 57 392 being built now, and plan to install a Dodge A-518 (overdrive) trans behind it. I`ve been in "discovery" mode for a minute, and all bases covered except the original 56 power steering column. It`s off the vehicle now..just wondering if it`s junk or what. How can I bench test this unit?? Hotheads has recommended a `94 Chevy S-10 pickup power steering pump. Will it work with the old column?? Timing is good to address the issue now...with the engine out. I`m looking for a way to verify it`s working...or choose a different approach. PLEASE...anyone with knowledge of 1956 steering columns..please respond. Thanks!!

Those gear boxes are twitchy to begin with. Based on what you are building I would recommend another course of action. To match an appropriate pump, compare operating pressures from 56, or to a later model pump that can be adapted.

I agree. The big thing to look for is the output pressure because these early systems used unusually low pressures. The service manual states that 750-800 psi is maximum with 2 gal/minute max flow at 3000rpm. When I looked into it, I found that some later pumps made for rack & pinion setups used similarly low pressures, but you'll have to check it out. Pumps from the 1957 Chrysler should also work with compatible pressure if you can get your hands on one of them. Using the original column is an easy way to make it work out, so I agree with your plan.

Thanks for your reply. The hemi shop rebuilding my 392 recommends a Saginaw pump from a 94 S-10 pickup. I have one ordered. But if it`s too much pressure output, can the pump pressure be regulated down..??

Also, if I can find a early Chrysler power steering pump, can it be disconnected from the useless generator..??

From 57 on the PS pumps on Chrysler cars were separate.
