I was messing in my engine bay today, removing the upper rad hose and thermostat housing so I could re-install the thermostat (after system flushing) and change the hose clamps (from Corbin to lined gear clamps). When I stopped the engine and popped the hood, I looked down at the fuel pump and saw (and smelt) that it was wet with fuel (Chevron 94). I couldn't believe it. I wiped it off and the leakage stopped. It seemed to be coming from the edge of the diaphragm where it is sandwiched between the upper and lower parts of the fuel pump shell.

I completed the rad hose stuff and then tightened the screws on the fuel pump. They weren't real loose but when I started the engine to monitor the rad hose stuff, I also monitored the fuel pump. No leakage of coolant or gasoline.

But then I wondered, a) was this something I should have been checking periodically? and b) was this the source of the fuel smell that I would get the odd time, thinking that it was a small leak at the carburetor?

So the question is "Should the screws on a mechanical fuel pump be checked and tightened on a regular basis?"

The pump is the second from the left and then shown below (after I tightened the screws = no leakage):

So either nobody else has ever encountered this issue or it is so obviously a regular maintenance check item or...???

I am just curious/feeling stupid for missing this leak before.

Not surprising that a pump that has been sitting for years on a shelf (I assume) might need the screws tightened. I don't think this is something that needs to be done on a regular basis.

I agree, that it doesn't need to be done on a regular basis, but it would be a good idea on a new rebuilt pump after a few heat cycles. After that, it should be fine.

I have never checked the screws on my fuel pump before but I'm going to do it tonight. I can't see how it would hurt to check and might head off a problem down the road. And it's real easy to check, that's for sure.

Same here. I've never checked my fuel pump's screws.

It's easy to shorten the loose end of your hose clamps and round the cut edge off with a grinder. Might save you a few cuts.
