Apparently he really wanted a '59 instead. The more I see it, the less I like all the spring special do dads. The only one I actually like is the medallion on the grille, everything else is a downgrade for me.

And Neil, if he were alive, would be quick to point out that this car wasn't born with the spring special license plate surround because the "Dodge" emblem isn't positioned properly for it.

To be clear, Canadian Mayfairs and Regents were Plodges. However, Custom Royals were (mostly) Custom Royals, at least body wise. V8 engines were probably Plymouth Polys (like the 318).

That 354 was not in the engine bay when the car left the factory.

Hate the engine bay wiring mess. Hate the interior, especially the gauges. (Okay, its a "hot rod")

I didn't know that 59 taillights, etc would fit on 57/58 fenders (??)

But ya gotta love the braided hoses, chrome booster & master! A '58 Custom Royal would have come with a big block 350 motor in the US.

The VIN is for a Windsor Canadian built car. I believe production of this model/body style there was 1,262. It would have a 354 from factory, but no hemi heads.

Sorry. Not buying it.

A Chrysler 354 Spitfire Poly in a 1958 Canadian built Dodge Custom Royal? Maybe, but I would like to see some brochure corroboration or something for that one.

Yes, the 354 Poly standard on the 58 Canadian Custom Royal. What engine do you propose they came with? My first car was a US built 58 Custom Royal, and it had a B engine, probably a 350. At the time I was told that someone must have put that engine in because it "should have had a 354 " I found out later that the car was US built. It was sold new at a dealer in Chilliwack, BC (near the US border). There had been a CAW Strike in Windsor at the time and some of the Canadian dealers near border crossings were heading over the border and buying inventory from the nearest US dealer. Once this action became known, they were told in no uncertain terms to STOP. The Canadian built Custom Royals carried the upholstery from a Royal, instead of the stuff used on the US built Custom Royal. We always got the short end of the stick. This car below is Canadian built 58 Custom Royal, showing the Royal interior and the Poly engine.

I guess I got swayed by Bill Watson (Chrycoman)'s comments about the 1957and 1958 Canadian Dodge Custom Royal engines:

"The 313-cid V8 was derived by boring out the 303-cid V8. Both had a 3.31" stroke, but the 313 had a 3.875" bore compared to the 3.81" of the 303. The 313 was introduced in 1957 for the Dodge Custom Royal, while the smaller Dodges and Plymouths got the 303. For 1958, the 313 V8 moved down to the small Dodges and Plymouths while the Canadian-built Dodge Custom Royal went to the 325-cid V8. "

Well, Bill usually knows what he's talking about. I'm going to pose the question to Greg Leggatt, in an email as he knows them inside-out.

Greg Leggatt just emailed me back and confirmed, yes the 1958 Canadian built Custom Royal came with the 354 Chrysler Poly as standard equipment.

If correct, that's pretty cool. That means the Canadian CRL is almost a '58 D501, just different heads.

Okay. I guess somebody should contact Bill Watson and/or Allpar and get a correction made on that point.

I like the blackened out headlight bezels. I'm planning to do the same thing on my '58 Coronet after I get it painted. But that ultra-wide SS trim on there doesn't do anything for me.

The saying is "It's your car, do what you want", which is obviously true. But don't expect your personal (bad) taste to translate to everyone else's approval when you go to sell it. The interior on this car is very likely a major let-down for most people.

Not for these folks. They find it inspiring.

Of course it is correct and the interesting aspect of this engine in that particular chassis are the absolutely unique front engine mounts that position the engine about an inch or so ahead to get more comfortable clearance between engine and heater housing. The same mounts the factory issued for the 501s. The poly heads and hydraulic lifters made that CDN Custom Royal and USA Saratoga engine a favourite for stock performance and easy maintenance.

I actually like the fat side trim, looks good with these 2 tone colours I recon. If I could own this car I would change a few things. Still, if the body is as good as it looks it is a cheap Canadian Dodge right?
