I have a 56’ Dodge Custom Royal Vin 35080619 4dr, 315 cu in, 2 bbl, 3 spd. How do I verify Differential manufacturer, gear ratio, and ring gear info? Most likely need Pinion Bearing but could be more.
Thanks,
Rodney

The rear differential ratio is stamped onto the gear carrier just below the filling plug. For me with originally a Powerflite, it was "3.54". (see photo below)

For a 3 spd manual I think the two most common rear diff ratios were 3.9, 4.1 and 4.3, probably depends on whether there was also overdrive at the end of the manual transmission.

As for parts, there are many. When you get a better idea what the issue is and what you need/want to replace, we can find the OE part numbers for you, if you can't. There is still some New Old Stock parts out there in internetland.

The rear end is Chrysler made, commonly referred to as the 8 1/4" rear end. Most internal parts date back to 1937.

If it is the Pinion Bearing, the bearing is in a two part set: the 1401 808 cone and rollers and the 1401 810 cup.

Timken made/makes the bearing set. The 1401 808 was a Timken HM-89443 and the 1401 810 was a Timken HM-89410.

Hiltop Mopar has a NOS set (ignore the 8 3/4" note):

Some 8 3/4" use the same pinion bearings as the 8 1/4".

That was my thought as well.

My gear carrier is stamped 3.73T
I've found a mechanic to work on this, not many. He suggests rebuilding and replacing at least the 4 bearings (Pinion and Differential) while it's torn apart. Would you agree? He doesn't want to tie up the rack too long. Thinking to pre- purchase these parts ahead of time, or a kit (if it exists).

Decide first if you would like to change to a different gear ratio because there are none available new. You have to purchase a used one and install it. In general, it is a lot cheaper to just get another used one that works and install it. Just replace the pinion seal and most of the time, that's all it needs.

There is no "kit" so you will have to source parts on your own.

I'm a bit surprised that you don't have a 3.54 rear diff but 3.73 was certainly available for 56 Dodges, as a option. Maybe "recommended" (?) in "Hilly" (or was that "Flat"?) country (I vaguely remember seeing that somewhere).

I didn't like the "earred" U-joint, so I swapped to a 58 style rear U-joint. There were a couple of issues:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69669&...

At the same time, I also replaced the pinion seal with a modern type. Again, there were some issues:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=71686&...

Good luck.

The difference in the gap of the yoke dust shield is cause for alarm.

I thought that too but then I thought that it *MIGHT* just be an optical illusion. If it isn't then, yes, there is some kind of issue (bearing, etc)

In the diagram below, I have previously identified the front pinion bearing listed as being in section 3-22-24/25 (see above). This is PN 1401 808 which is Timken HM-89443.

The rear pinion bearing is PN 1401 809 which is Timken HM-89446.

The other bearings are listed in as being in Section 3-11-1/2. These are listed in those sections as 693 404 and 403. These are Timken 25580 - 25520 as shown here:

I've decided to remove the forward mount differential. Assuming its the front bearing, which may also be causing the yoke dust shield gap. Want to replace rear bearing and inspect gears while doing all this. Having difficulty removing Hub. Key lock won't budge. BTW, I converted to disc brakes and have had the hub off before. Not sure what has changed. Any technique you suggest?

It's the rear Pinion Bearing. Going to start costing out all 4 bearings, slinger, oil seal, etc. Flange is fine. Unfortunately, the Ring Gear & Pinion teeth damaged. I believe that PN is 1567900. Suggestions for source?

Just get another used third member with the gear ratio you want and replace the unit. Either that or replace the whole rear end with one from a '65-'67 B-body.

I've got a whole rear end from a 56 royal with 3.54 gears I removed from my car. Located in Mobile Al. Free to someone who can use it. Ran smooth with no noise.

Finally found a 3.73 from 56' Royal. Generally looks fine except the flange is different. Mine has yoke/flange; the donor car has round plate-no yoke. I've found 2 parts diagram each using same 16-20-01, but clearly different parts. What I need most from the donor is the pinion shaft, is it interchangeable?

Yes, you should be able to swap pinion yolks around to use your old one on there - as long as they are from Dodge or Plymouth.

The 3.73 was defective. Found a 3.54, replaced bearings, looking good. All together now, but want to lubricate rear axle bearing through the grease hole. Any suggestions for type of grease, mfr., source? Service manual suggests 'Short fiber wheel bearing grease-Medium'. Also, how do you know how much to add?
