The other day I was out in the garage, trying to organize the chaos (a bit - so I could find some things), when I rediscovered a box that contained used (not bad) 56 Dodge Custom Royal grill bars and their attachments (signal lights and grill bar teeth/caps). I went through the teeth and decided that at least one of the left side teeth/caps (PN 1655 345) was better than one of the left teeth/caps that were on my car. So I decided to swap them.

Back in March 2018, I had to remove the grill bars as part of another project and in doing so, I cleaned and painted the back of the grill bars. I did NOT remove the teeth/caps at that time. I re-found the post about rehabbing the grill bars this AM and in that post, I said:

"Today's photos (note: I consciously left the grill bar teeth on, thinking that if I tried to take them off, at least one of the studs would break or something and open up another can of worms):"

I do understand my aversion to opening cans of worms but, in retrospect, that was lame. I should have tried removing them and then cleaning and polishing the grill bar chrome in those areas. Duh.

This is what I ended up with in March 2018 (you can see the location of the three grill bar teeth/caps and the pressed metal 10-24 nuts (two per cap)):

Okay back to the present:

I had totally forgotten that I HAD NOT removed the teeth back in 2018 so when I reached under the bar with my mini-rachet and removed the two nuts on the tooth/bar that I was swapping for the better one, I was sort of half-surprised that one nut came off with the 10-24 stud and the other just came off by itself. Hmm.... Oh well no biggy.

I cleaned and polished the grill bar where that tooth/cap had been and went to install the better tooth/cap (which by the way, had both its 10-24 studs in place). NOPE. I could NOT get the cap in place (this was the furthest outboard tooth/cap where the grill opening is narrowing down) with the two studs on. I had to remove the studs and put the tooth/cap in place and then blindly install the studs from the bottom (by feel) and then and only then, add the nuts and tighten them down.

The grill/caps are chromed cast pot metal so they could easily be rechromed if need be. All of mine have minor bubbling but now with the "new" one in place, the bubbling is, in total very minor)

Okay, the above was a hint for 1956 Dodge Custom Royal (and Royal) owners re: installation of the out-board most grill teeth/caps.

Now the trivia:

The 1955 Dodge grill teeth are flatter (not as high) as the 1956 Dodge grill teeth. As a result, they have different part numbers. I think you could swap 1956 teeth onto the 1955 Custom Royal/Royal
grill bars (the grill bars have the same PNs in 1955 and 1956) and 1955 teeth onto 1956 bars. But you would have to be consistent, no mixed teeth, unless you are into that sort of thing.

The flatter 1955 grill bar teeth/caps are listed in the collision damage book as PN 1599 519 (Left) and 520 (right). However, I have photos of 55 Dodge grill teeth/caps as being 1599 469 and 470. I don't know what the differences between the 519/520 and the 469/470 teeth are.

The taller 1956 grill bar teeth/caps are listed in the collision damage book as PN 1655 344 (right) and 345 (left). I have found some on eBay but none have different PNs like in 1955.
