Have restored the desoto steering wheel, shaft, outer casing and found the shaft bearing is kaput! Apparently the bearing being 22mm ID x 44 mm OD x 9 mm thick is a special made for mopar. I have searched every where to no avail, it is a very unusual bearing with only 6 ball bearings in it. The only alternative is a 60 x 22 - 2rs that is 22 mm ID x 44 mm OD x 12 mm thick, a sealed bearing that is 3 mm thicker do you guys think it will work in to the system?

Have you considered fabricating a bushing from a low friction super tough polymer like POM ? I think that would work as well ,outer surface tight to the tube and inner surface with a little
clearance on the shaft. It would last forever.

IIRC (could be wrong) the race or something in the bearing is nylon to prevent ground, so a regular bearing does not work. I rejected the idea first, but what Ralf posted should work and last forever for that application.
I installed leaf spring main and shackle PU bushings 150+K miles ago and they are still like new. The inner sleeves or the shackle bolts must have moved under load a billion times, rubbing the PU. Unbelievable.

I checked the bearing that has now fallen apart and there is no visable nylon there. I drove it home from Broken Hill when I bought it a couple years ago and everything worked fine. Thanks Guys
