On my 1957 Dodge Royal, D 500 Lancer, does the heather core pull forward through engine compartment or does it come out under dash?

I have a small leak somewhere, I smell antifreeze for a short time at a traffic signal, it disipates when I pull away. Also, when I raise hood. However, I do not see evidence of a leak outside or inside the car. Windows do not fog and carpet is dry, with no evidence of a leak under glove box where I located temp control valve. Checked freeze plugs under motor all appear dry .

I am going to remove heater box cover to inspect soon. Are there any instructions on how to remove the heater core if I see rust or a leak? No section in shop manual regarding heather core that I could find.

Location: So. Cal		It comes out from the engine compartment side. Your smell could be coming just from the overflow tube at the radiator. These cars were not very sophisticated. Try connecting up an overflow bottle first and see if that fixes the smell. If you can't find a leak anywhere, I would be very hesitant to tear it apart. You can also check for a leak under the heater housing in the engine compartment.

As Nathan (Powerflite) suggests, the heater core is removed from the engine bay. His suggestion to check the overflow is also a very good one.

The heater core lives inside that glass fiber-reinforced shroud.

Your's is probably a "705" heater system. The core is item 8 in this diagram:



This one happens to be in a Super D500 engine bay. Have fun getting all those shroud bolts:



Here is a 57 with the shroud, heater core and everything removed, showing why the heater core has to go out towards the engine
