Um...Mike. Is that the horn relay, not the starter relay? It is important to starting but it DOES NOT transfer power from the battery to the starter. It does provide a point in the engine bay to get power from the battery to the ignition coil, which is important.

There are new ones out there to be had. Or you can open yours up and determine whether the issue is contact points or a broken wire.

Okay my bad. Sure looked like a horn relay (at least a 1956 horn relay).

When I read "starter relay" in Mike's first post, I immediately thought "starter solenoid" which, apparently is different.

Here is a 1956 era starter solenoid:

I guess the difference is the starter in 1957 (??). Two wire, with the actual solenoid on the starter. Still I would have expected heavier connections on the "relay".

Sorry. I was wrong.

Hi Dave,

It's for the starters that have the solenoid on top instead of the bendix drive type solenoid/relay like you're picture.

The relay only energies the solenoid on the starter, there is no real load on the relay itself, just takes a power from the positive cable to work the relay and solenoid on starter.

Thank you, fellas.  I did get one of the later ones for $35, but the tabs go out to the sides.  It works for now, but I'd like to get a correct replacement.  I've found them on-line from $285 to about $95.

Hi Mike,

Can you not swap the cases over?

Agree (to the possibility). Based on the similarity to my 56 Dodge horn relay, that might just work:

That may be the thing to do.  Thought I would ask here if anyone had a spare they would sell first though...

Is this a match?? A little pricey, even for ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/203590219321?hash=item2f66ec3639:g:U6EAAOSw...

Yes, this is a match.  It was the least expensive I found on the interwebs.

last time I checked, I was driving a De Soto - not a Duesenberg.

Hi Mike,

For the price of a original you can alter one of these,

Thanks Paul.

Thank you, Paul - that' s probably what I'll end up doing.

Particularly if no one here has a spare.

I P.M.ed you that I have them back on August 3, 2020, when you first asked about
them --- and you replied that "you were on vacation in the mountains and had spotty cell phone
service" and "that you would call me when you got back".....

Over 13 months ago, I still haven't heard from you..... Are you still on vacation in
the mountains ???

I have them BRAND NEW --- N.O.S. ---- at far less than $ 279.....
They, are 100 % CORRECT, of course.......

Hi, Craig:

I am sorry about my poor communication efforts.  What is your price?
