New guy here with new car for me.

Gerry: Welcome. Beautiful car.

I am guessing that your cowl data tag (on the right end of the firewall for a Detroit car, with VIN startin 34 or 35, on the left (driver's) side for an LA car (VIN starting 42)) will say:

BDY = 834 = V8 Custom Royal 4dr hardtop

PNT = 175 = Sapphire white roof and saddle and Crown yellow lower.

Can't see the interior (please post more photos, including the engine bay)
but I would guess

TRM = 545 (a black, white and silver combo) (??)

Something like this:

Fancy wheels.

The car was formerly owned by a volunteer at the AACA Museum in Hershey. I bought it in Virginia and I need to arrange transportation to a shop to have Vintage A/C installed. I have applied to 'Fantom Works' but I have not heard back from Dan Short yet.

I checked the engine # as a D633 bu the car is a 2bbl.

I checked the engine # as a D633 but the car is a 2bbl.

I can tell from the air cleaner that the engine is a 2 bbl. I also see power steering (the pump at the back of the generator) and power brakes (the "accordion" on the firewall).

Did I have the BDY, PNT and TRM codes correct? (Please post a photo of the cowl data tag if you can).

Yes 315 polys will have their engine numbers stamped as D633-nnnnn. The IBM card would say whether the engine had the power pack (4 bbl, dual exhausts) or not. In your case, probably not.

An interior photo would be nice too.

Good luck with the Vintage Air.

I am in Boynton Beach but the car is still in Virginia at the dealer. I found two shops near Orlando to install A/C.
I spoke with Vintage Air. The problem is mounting the compressor and alternator. No one makes a kit. (It is not a tri-five Chevy).
I like the look of the 'Heritage' unit from Vintage Air. It matches the round dash gauges.

This is the link to the original ad where I found the car: https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1432785/1956-dodge-lancer-for-...

Hello, Nice Car! I installed A/C on my 55 dodge. I used a Hurricane unit because my car was a heater delete car and someone install a small box heater be behind the glove box. The Hurricane unit was almost the same size as the small box unit heater. I found a mount off of a 56 Imperial and used a universal mount for the sanden commpressor. I ordered round air vents to match to the round gauges. In your case I would use a under dash unit , That way you wont mess up your factory heater/defroster .

Adding A/C to a 56 Dodge with Generator-powered PS pump *MIGHT* be easier if you can locate a non-PS pump right side 56 Dodge exhaust manifold. If the 56 Dodge did NOT get PS, the generator was mounted on the right side of the engine and, more importantly, on a flange that was cast as an integral part of the exhaust manifold. The flange should provide a nice platform for a new bracket for the A/C compressor mount.

And on a completely different topic, there is something wrong with the signal light stalk set up on your "new" car. It should be sticking out to the left at the "9 o'clock" position, not 10:30 or 11:

I noticed the misplaced directional stalk too when I drove it. That will have to wait as I have more serious things to address.

I just got the paperwork by FedEx from the dealer in Virginia where I bought the car three weeks ago. It included a stack of receipts for the restoration work done from 2007 to 2010 by the previous owner who was a volunteer guide at the AACA Museum in Hershey. Pages and pages that came to over $10,000 in parts, a set of custom wire wheels ($1600) and a $5000 two-tone paint job. I guess I got a deal.

When I saw the car for the first time, I noticed the cigar lighter was missing. So I looked on EBay I found a 56 Dodge lighter For Sale so I bought it. It came from a Michigan address. During my search of the history of this car, I found it was in an RM Auction two years ago in Auburn, Indiana, and did not meet the reserve. Auburn is not far from Michigan. I thought I had bought my original lighter back from someone with big pockets who was at the RM Auction. Well....Guess what was in the paperwork package from the dealer I bought the car from...The cigar lighter in a RM envelope. I apologize to all Southern Michigan residents.

Gerry sent me a nice photo of his 56 Dodge's cowl data tag and asked if I can interpret it (see way below):

So I will try (I presume others, e.g. frwl and RDP, will help if I mess up):

See below:

04 06 = The scheduled build date. Regarding VINs, Bruce Faulkner had a 04 02 in his list that had a VIN of 35103084 so I am guessing Gerry's will be above but close to that

16 055 = a production number that has no real meaning to us 65 years later

Body 834 = V8, Custom Royal, 4 dr hardtop

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69565&...

Paint: 175 = Sapphire White and Crown Yellow

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63553&...

Trim: 545 = Black, white and silver, like in the 1956 Dodge Mini-Brochure:

Similar 2 dr Lancer (545 as well):

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=65230&...

B 7 = The shipping route to the dealer destination. I *think* 7 = Truck but I cannot find the posts that frwl, RDP and/or 56D500boy agreed on a pattern for those routes.

SP 2 = ?? (frwl or RDP, can you please help here?)

I was trying to find touch up paint for my car, #175
I have the labels from the Dupont Centari paint used in 2007 when the car was painted.
I went to:https://www.automotivetouchup.com/touch-up-paint.
They said they could mix Primrose yellow #251 a Jaguar color that matched the original Crown Yellow.
They could not find the Sapphire white. My car was repainted with Kenworth Blanco.
They then sent me to this web site: https://paintref.com/paintref/index.shtml
WOW ! Has anyone else seen all this information?

Gerald: I needed to repaint the roof on my 56 Custom Royal. Initially I tried Ford Wimbledon white that I had been told is a good match for the 55-56 Sapphire White. It was okay but I thought it was too yellow. So I tried some other paints (all Duplicolor rattle cans).

I tried the Ford Wimbledon White, a GM Blanc and a Chrysler Stone White:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=71691&...

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=75368&...

And then this past September, I bit the bullet and went with the Chrysler Stone White (8 cans). It is whiter (less yellow) than the OE Sapphire but I liked it better:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=76336&...

All that said, Bruce Faulkner was crazy into 56 Dodges (He had two 56 Dodge D500s and still has a 56 Coronet (that he was trying to sell)). Bruce kept a 56 Dodge registry and a whole bunch of info regarding paint. His 56 D500s were white, yellow and charcoal grey. He developed and shared "modern" (Imron) forumulas for these paints:

My 1956 Dodge Story
I have owned a 1950 Dodge Meadowbrook sedan since my uncle died in 1973. It is all original except for a partial repaint in 1975. It has been trouble-free all these 49 years.
Now that my wife and I are retiring permanently to Florida, I decided to give the car to my nephew, who lives in Oregon. The car would not be happy in the Florida heat.
Even before my nephew took the car, I missed having an old car in the garage. Over the years the Dodge had many stable-mates. All the rest have moved on to new owners.
My wife and I decided we needed an old car that could have A/C. I wanted a mid-50’s Desoto, but it would not fit in my Florida garage. I was browsing the internet one night (a dangerous pass time) and I came across a white/yellow 1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer at a dealer/museum in Virginia. There were 30 pictures on the web page. It shouted “Take me to Florida with you”.

I called the dealer the next day and asked for some more information. The salesman said, “I have 200 cars here, I have no idea. We are open 9 to 5 every day except Sunday. Come see for yourself.” I was put off by his attitude and said “No, thanks”.
We thought about this car for a few days and studied the pictures on-line. Included in the pictures was a stack of receipts for the restoration work done. One receipt had the previous owner’s name and address. I called him. He had been a guide at the AACA Museum in Hershey. One day, 20 years previously, the proverbial ‘Little old Lady’ came into the Museum and said she wanted to sell her 1956 Dodge. He explained that people donated their cars to the museum so the public could come and admire them. She was disappointed because she needed the money. He walked outside with her and quickly made a deal to buy the car.
He did a very through restoration; paint, chrome, upholstery, mechanics. He said it had NO rust and was a straight, solid, unmolested car. He used it for many years to commute to the museum on nice days and he regretted that years later he sold it to a “huckster”.
I called the salesman back and asked for some reason for me to make a 500 mile trip to see the car. He recommended I talk to a local repair shop and have them evaluate the car. The shop was very professional (I make this statement as a former Cadillac dealer service manager) and they gave the car an excellent report including many pictures.
We made an appointment to drive down from our summer home in Pennsylvania to see the car. I brought a magic creeper and a flashlight. The car was parked in the front of the building and I darn-near shook the salesman’s hand before I even opened the door. It was exactly as the previous owner and the local repair shop had described. It drove beautifully, even on the old, dried-out bias-ply tires. I told the salesman that we had a deal if he took off $1000 for the age-cracked tires. He said, “That’s the price. Take it or leave it. Don’t do me any favors.”
I took it.

Great story Gerard. Beautiful car. I can understand why you couldn't resist.

After one year of ownership, I finally got A/C installed. I chose a Vintage Air unit to match the round dash gauges and a machined face to match the door panels. The biggest problem was generating enough power to run the Vintage Air unit. I explored using an Isuzu alternator but I was unable to find a machinist to fabricate an adapter to the stock P/S pump. I tried a belt driven P/S pump below the existing generator, but it did not fit. I eventually had my factory generator rebuilt by Classic Generator Rebuilding in Texas. The rebuilt unit produces 45 Amps. That is enough to run the A/C but not an additional cooling fan. I replaced the factory 4 blade fan with a larger 6 blade and had a 1 inch spacer made to fit.
The installation was done by an expert mechanic/fabricator from Jacksonville, FL. that I met thru Dave. He also took care of a few other items that neither I nor the local South-East Florida mechanics could solve.
Driving around with no A/C and all the windows open this summer the headliner seams ripped so now I am waiting for a replacement from SMS.
