Veteran Posts: 108 | Hi everyone, Just seeing if anyone has a wiring diagram for a 1961 Dodge Polara. I am hunting down some wires underneath the dash to repair and some of the diagrams I came across don't jive with what I am seeing in my car. I have a knob on the dash for interior/instrument lighting I am not familiar with past 61's and a yellow wire under the dash that is not hooked up. thanks in advance Ken

Veteran Posts: 108 | Thanks man I appreciate it! Maybe I'm just not seeing it. There is a knob on the dash for instrument/interior and it has an orange wire on the back and one tab empty I'm wondering if thats where the lost yellow wire goes either way ty.

There is a knob on the dash for instrument/interior and it has an orange wire on the back and one tab empty I'm wondering if thats where the lost yellow wire goes either way ty. From what I see, the manual (non-door) dome light switch has two yellow wires (in and out). The instrument light rheostat seems to be all orange wires. ??? Edited by 56D500boy 2021-09-18 7:09 PM

Veteran Posts: 108 | Having trouble inserting pic. Anyway the dash has a knob labeled interior independent of the light switch. That is what I am referring to.

Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | IDK if that helps, but if memory serves me correctly you can increase the instrument lighting with that knob and if you turn it all the way up you switch on the dome light. I should have a color coded wiring diagram somewhere, I'll see if I can find it later

Extreme Veteran Posts: 417 Location: Bräcke,Sweden | The knob is for the map light, if you want to turn on the domelight you turn your lightswitch counterclockwise. I will try to send you a pic of the wiringdiagram in a pm.

Veteran Posts: 108 | Ty Polara61 this is a great help. It must be the map light switch I am seeing that is labeled interior on the dash. The diagrams you posted I cannot make out the color of the wire key to see what I should be hunting down.

Veteran Posts: 108 | Ty guys. I think I have found some problems with my wiring under the dash. Both of your diagrams show the map light switch which I did not see the first time. Is the map light usually located above the radio? I think I have no map light but a switch on the dash and the switch has a single orange wire going to it coming off of the terminal block. The same terminal block that the red wire for the cigar lighter comes from. Ill post some pics soon. I'm glad I didn't turn on the switch because I am pretty sure it would have been a dead short.

Veteran Posts: 108 | Hey guys I found this diagram in the 1960 and 1961 dodge passenger car service manual. I have an interior light switch on the dash which I guess is a map lights switch but no actual map light in the car. Once I got under the dash I found a single orange wire landed on one of the tabs on the back of the map light switch. There was also a disconnected yellow wire that I believe goes to this switch. I rang out the yellow wires and I believe that they are bringing 2 yellow wires one from each door jam switch into a single wire to land on the back of the switch. The orange wire appears to be wrong to me and is coming from the terminal block where the cigarette lighter wire comes from so I disconnected it. Is this terminal block a 12V positive source? If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it since I have to repair the yellow wires because they are frayed from mouse damage. thanks, Ken
