My 56 Custom Royal does not have a fan shroud, although I see them on other cars on this forum. My car did not have A/C but I intend to install a Vintage Air unit. Anybody have one For Sale? I emailed 'The Big M' but have not heard back.

Gerry: My non-AC 56 Dodge with the D500 engine does not have a shroud either. Some of the 1956 Mopar cars that you see with shrouds are Desotos and Chryslers which have longer bodies that the 56 Dodges, i.e. there is more space between the engine and the radiator in Desotos and Chryslers than the Dodges, hence the advantage of/need for the shroud.

That said, here are some photos of a 56 Dodge with the D500 engine, A/C and PS. It has a shround but it is very "thin" - looks like 2.5" or so. No where near as "thick" as the Chrysler and Desoto shrouds that I have seen.

They are not very intricate so if you really needed one and Big M doesn't have one, there are other yards (FLAPs in Minnesota) or one could be made from sheet metal (a bead roller would be handy).

Hope this helps:

I was killing time this morning and reading through old Forward Look posts. Dave, it is obvious that you have probably forgotten more about FL's than I will ever know.

Thanks, but my "knowledge" of FLs is primarily focussed on 1956 Dodges and 1956 and 57 D500 Dodges. There are others here with waaaay more FL knowledge that me.

Outstanding radiator and custom shroud. I am jealous of your engine compartment.
Since you do not have A/C why did you need the super radiator and alternator?

Thanks! That's an older photo, the plan from the start was to add ac to this car. Down here on the gulf coast, it's brutal in July and August with the humidity. The alternator was already on the car when I got it and I think it's ugly but it works good. I'll look at other options if I ever have to replace it. My last car I put a power master generator looking alternator on but it was expensive. I now have ac on the car.

I am in South Florida and this is exactly what I intend to do with my car. I have been researching Vintage Air systems. The round ducts of the Heritage model match the round dash gauges. My problem is that I need to climb over the A/C to exit the car through the passenger door if the car is in in the garage. I was thinking of a trunk unit.
Is that a custom compressor mount? My car has the P/S pump mounted to the generator on the other side of the engine. Another problem. I am trying to find a shop who can fabricate all these brackets. Who did your work?

Yea, south Florida.... you need ac! I modified a vintage air bracket for the front and made a bracket for the rear to attach to a intake bolt. I also thought about a rear mounted ac (I have a Chrysler Air Temp truck mounted unit) but decided to go with the under dash unit. I didn't think the trunk mounted unit would cool all that well. I did all the work myself but thr manual hose crimper I bought didn't crimp well enough and my lines leaked so I took my lines and had a shop recrimp. Let me know if you are interested in the trunk mounted unit I have.

I saw the Vintage Air bracket for a Hemi mount. I have spoken to two shops in Florida who have done Hemis. They are confident they can fabricate something. Thanks for the pictures.
If we had 1956 Chevys, we could get a box with everything in it including the hoses. Poor orphan Dodges.
How loud is the Vintage unit that you have? Does it cool well? Does it intrude on your right foot/leg? I would like to mount one higher under the dash except the vent control lever is in the way.
Please post a picture of the Chrysler unit that you have. I had a friend with a 53 Cadillac with the factory air in the trunk, but it had ducts in the roof to get air to the front seat.

Yes, those Chevy folks have it made but I like having something people don't see that often. I have my evaporator offset a little to the pass side and there's no intrusion for the driver or passenger. You could remove the vent lever and mount the evaporator higher. That would be easier then what I did add I had to fab new brackets to hang it low. It cools pretty good but the firewall needs to be insulated and make the cabin as tight as possible. It's not terribly loud but I usually have some oldies blaring on the hidden audio system. The noise of the ac had never been a problem for me.

The trunk mounted unit has 3 grille/deflectors in the package tray. The center is the return, the 2 outside blows and deflects air fwd along the headliner
