Figured it out and the fix is almost done. Some dumb ass ground out the pinion yoke where the u-joint bearing caps seat. Not straight, not even close. I did not put the driveshaft on myself as I had a fellow helping. That’s my excuse for not noticing the mess.

I took the car to Magnum Machine, Kamloops, BC., They do driveline balancing, etc, and they diagnosed the vibration immediately.I returned the car to my shop and removed the driveshaft, that was when I noticed the mess. Getting the pinion yoke off was a chore. I had to buy a 3/4” drive breaker bar and a 24” pipe wrench as my impact wrench would not bust the nut loose. The bar and a snipe did the job. Then I used a puller to remove the yoke from the pinion spline.

Magnum ordered a new pinion yoke for an 8-3/4” diff and has made a spacer washer to fit behind the pinion nut as the spline in this yoke is about 1/4” shorter than the original yoke. The new yoke takes a 315 (G) Moog u-joint. Cheap and easy to find.

I will put it all back together next week some time. Then a test drive with fingers crossed and then the car will be put to bed for the winter.

Frost is in the air and it is time for my wife and I to pack our clothes and venture south to Arizona for the winter. We have our vaccine shots and will live there as we do here in BC., staying away from crowds and people we don’t know.

Del: Glad to hear that you got your driveline vibration problem solved and that you now have a much easier to replace (in the future) MOOG 315 rear U-joint in your "new" later style yoke.

When I had my 56 converted to use a 58 10 spine yoke, I knew that the centerlines of the U-joint bearings were different but I didn't understand the ramifications. I had the swap done a shop because of that pinion nut. The shop whined about how tough it was to find a washer/spacer to make the 58 yoke work in my 56 gear carrier. Turned out that they used some Ford spacer (photo below).

I like the solution that Magnum used for your car, i.e. slicing the required thickness off the back of the 56 yoke to make the spacer. Not only is it a spacer but it is a splined spacer. That probably doesn't matter much but it certainly sounds good to me.

My experience:

The difference between the bottom of the U-joint bearing location between the 58 and 56 yokes

The "Ford" spacer:

(That I now see is widely available, e.g. Summit Racing):

Hope you get a good drive before you tuck the car in for the winter and head south.

No more vibration! I picked up my pinion yoke (PTI PowerTrain Industries, #2604-10) today and headed for my shop to get the job done. I picked up a new pinion seal #18880 to replace the leaky old one. Getting the old seal out took a 24" pry bar and levered it out. Squirted gear oil all over. Then I had to make a seal installing tool. Picture following. A couple of raps with a dead blow hammer and done. I coated the yoke splines with Never Seize, slipped it on along with the spacer washer, O.E. washer and nut. Torqued the nut to 250 lbs. ft Slipped the driveshaft in place and coupled it up. Backed off the hoist and out of the shop for a test drive. No more vibration, nice and smooth.

That's great news Del. Good job.

Two things:

1. Did you happen to measure the thickness of the "new" spacer (made from the OE 56 pinion yoke)? It might help 55-56 folks doing this same conversion (with the 57-58 10 spline yoke).

2. How about a photo of the other side of the seal installation tool?

Hi. I’m sorry but cannot recall from memory the spacer thickness as I am basking In the Arizona sun and my note book is looked up for the winter. I will see if I have a few more pictures that might tell the tale.

It is cold and wet back home.
