I could swear I saw somewhere recently that someone asked the color silver used on the engine block. I just can't find the post but if I remember
correctly it was close in color of a source of rattle can paint that is easily obtainable. Close is all I need - does not have to be perfect.

Thanks guys.

I think it was Powerflite (Nathan) who recently suggested that Dupli-color Engine cast coat Aluminum was a close match to the factory silver.

Duplicolor aluminum engine paint is a good choice for the engine from a rattle can. They also sell a gold color that's pretty close, and there are others as well.

Looks too dull (and too Chevy) to my eyes (at least from this Eastwood photo):

I am only painting valve covers and the Duplicolor cast aluminum I bought this afternoon looks pretty close to the intake manifold and block.

Thanks guys and I’ll let you know what the result is. I should know by Thursday when I get back to working on the engine. If it’s not dark enough I can go with the argent. I’m sure I’ll be able to get it figured out.

Years ago this discussion was held on the old Plymouth Owner's Club forums. The general concensus was that the Bill Hirsch high temp silver was very very close to the original silver. I used it on my Flathead back in 2001-ish. It has held up perfectly and looks almost 100% the way it did when I painted it. The second place was the VHT silver high temp header paint. It is brighter and possibly 100% original but it does not hold up as well. Some people have had very good luck painting with the VHT and the covering with a clear coat for durability. I have not tried this yet, but I plan to.

As of right now, I paint every engine I build with the Bill Hirsch silver. Regardless of make. So yes, there are at least a dozen Chevy engines, three or four small block Mopars, and an IH Scout engine with silver engines.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I tried the Duplicolor cast aluminum first and it matched perfectly so there was no need to go further. I’ll post pictures when I get it all buttoned up.
