Hi all I’m new to this forum and I am a new owner of a 1956 dodge coronet Sierra royale station wagon fitted with a 270 poly engine .I am in the uk and having great difficulty getting a new starter motor identified I would use a more modern one that would fit if available .
Also I would like to fit an electronic distributor or electronic ignition but I can’t seem to find the information of what exactly I need And the part numbers
Any help greatly appreciated
I have read the thread that states some distributors are interchangeable so electronic are available but I don’t fully understand what I need to fit one
Thanks Phil

Welcome to the forum.

We always like photos of new members cars. (HINT HINT) (less than 250 kb, not an iPhone jpeg)

As for the distributor, I recently enquired about using an LA Block 273-318-340-360 electronic distributor on my 56 315 hemi and I was told that NO that will not work because the 315 block is a raised block and the LA blocks are shorter. So unless I got and longer distributor shaft, they would not work on *MY* engine.

HOWEVER, the 270 in 1956 is very likely a carry over from the 1953-1955 241-270 blocks which were NOT raised. Therefore, you will probably be able to use a LA Block 273-318-340-360 electronic distributor like these kits:

Just confirming that the 270 block height should be 9.29". The 315 block heights are 10.38".

Your 270 engine number, (stamped on the block near the oil filler/breather tube, just in front of the galley cover, should be D631-nnnn.

If there was a deck height issue, you could modify the 273-360 LA distributor with this extension shaft:

That VIN indicates that your car is a *very* late build 1955 Dodge from the Detroit factory (see below).

If you can post a photo of your car's cowl data tag (like the example below), we can probably tell you more about the car as it left the factory.

In 1955, all the Dodge V8s were 270s, either the Super Red Ram "hemi" (very wide rectangular valve covers with spark plug wire covers) or the scallop-edged valve cover poly.

The idea regarding the 273-360 distributor came from this Nick's garage video in which he uses a 340 distributor in a 241 hemi (same low block as a 270):

That is good news about the starter. Hopefully the shipping will be fast and not too expensive.

I should have said that an engine with a number starting D551 will be a Coronet 270 cu in 2bbl V8 know in 1955 as the "Red Ram" engine (the 270 hemi was the Super Red Ram)

Hi thanks for more great info I watched the video from nicks garage re the electronic distributor the info I’m reading says 273-318-340-360 deck height is 9.60 and my 270 is 9.29 as you stated so will the distributor be to shaft be to short or to long I’m not sure which way and will I need the shaft from hot heads I’m confused about the fit now any clarity appreciated thanks Phil
Managed to upload an image of the coronet when I picked the car up. it’s had a lot of work done prior to me getting it body off for chassis and floors and sills ,new alloy fuel tank, engine rebuild which heads have bigger valves than 270 can’t remember which and paperwork is not to hand at the minute, full rewire ,was driving terribly but 4 new shock absorbers and the tracking was miles out passenger front wheel was towed in a mile all sorted and she’s driving well now until starter motor issue
Thanks Phil

The deck height is measured from the centerline of the crankshaft to the block where the head mates to the block. It has nothing to do directly with the distance from the top of the block (at the back of the engine) down to the lobe/gear on the camshaft where the distributor sits. I think that we can trust Nick if he says that a 340 distributor fits in a 241 (and therefore 270) block.

Again, a photo of your wagon's cowl data tag will help us to tell you more about the car (er...."motor" in Britspeak )

Paint stripper will work to take those layers off. Be gentle. She's an old girl

Got my starter motor motor from strictly vintage autos today fitted straight on and she fired up straight away my old one is getting refurbished ,they seem to be a rare item and no new ones that I can find except one piggy back style new starter I am told will fit from vintage auto garage Starter - 3244-GR-CH but it’s $345 without postage anyway I am sorted on starter motors for now.
