Trying to troubleshoot the temp gauge on my 56 wagon. Sender is new but the gauge won’t come off the cold peg. I did a precursory look behind the dash and all the wires seem intact, looking for some more troubleshooting advice.

Thanks

Have you checked to see if the thermostat is working, or even there? Does the upper radiator hose feel really hot when the engine is warmed up to operating temp? If
not it could be your thermostat.

I went through this with my 56 Dodge. Changed the sender, etc. etc. Eventually, I installed a NOS gauge that I bought off eBay and magic: It worked. It was never the sender. It was the gauge.

Your 56 Desoto gauge should be PN 1648 801 (or 1648801 when google searching)

New ones are available (Note for Desotos, the gauge numbers are on the clear plastic cover, not on the actual gauge):

Thanks all. I just did the test as outlined in the shop manual which has you ground the sender wire but the needle still stayed on the cold peg. I’ll try the thermostat just in case but looks like it might be a gauge issue .
