Hello all,

Restoring a '59 Belvedere 2 door hardtop. I was planning to go as original as I can.

As such, I was planning to run the original drum brake setup (11" drums). (not looking to get into a disc vs drum debate in this thread. Plenty of those elsewhere.) However, the rear axle in this car was swapped out for one from a late 60's Charger before I got the car. (I believe it was a '68 Charger, but I'm not positive).

I am not very knowledgeable about the brake setups on these cars. Since I don't have my original rear brakes, is there any reason the original style master cylinder won't be compatible with the later brakes on the Charger rear axle? If there is a compatibility issue, I may just abandon originality with the brakes and go with something more modern.

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks,

I owned a 69 Charger with heavy duty drum brakes, IIRC the rears were 11"/2 1/2" If that is the same size as your rear brakes then they will be larger (more surface area) than your original 11" by2" front brakes on your 59. What I'm thinking is the rear might lock up before the front in a hard stop which is not good.

I installed a complete '65-'67 C-body rear end with 11 X 2 1/2" brakes in my '57 Dodge wagon and used the original MC. No problems.

My shop installed an 8 3/4 rear end from a 1971 New Yorker in my 1961 Newport convertible. No issues at all with the brakes. The original 1961 front drums, and original single power master cylinder, are still in the car. It stops great.

As we also installed the 727 transmission from the New Yorker in the 61, and that trans of course does not have the drive line parking brake attached, we also hooked up the parking brake line to the brakes in the 1971 rear.

The only complication with the rear end swap was cutting the leaf spring mounting perches off and welding them back on slightly inboard, as the 71 rear is about 1.5 inches wider than the 61 rear. The tires now fill the rear wheel wells a little better.

I have Dana in my '60 Fury with the OE master and front drums. Years back when I first got it to move I had no issues with the brakes. This included going from the front range in Colorado to the western slope via Monarch pass. I am not going to put disk's on mine simply because drums weigh less than a disk set up. But with that as I have stated in other posts this is not going to be OE again. Mine will be a street rod and occasionally 1/4 mile it.
