Veteran Posts: 111 | We just got my great grandmothers 57 Dodge 2 door suburban with the push button torq flite and when we went to bring it to our house via a flat bed tow truck, the car rolled forward in neutral but would not roll backwards in neutral. I was able to disconnect the driveshaft so we could roll it either way and I noticed that the parking brake drum on the trans would only spin one way in neutral. Is this a common problem and if so, what is it so I can fix this issue to get the car road worthy again. Is it some kind of hill holder option that the car needs to be running in order for it to be released or is there some mechanical problem internal of the trans? Thanks in advance, Brian

Mine would grab in reverse(the actual trans) also, it could be a stuck governor valve... but will normally need a rebuild. There is no hill locker option.

Veteran Posts: 111 | Yeh, I didn’t think there was a hill holder option. Hoping the trans doesn’t need a rebuild as that’s going to be one heavy trans to yank out.

Veteran Posts: 111 | Parking brake is released. It rolls forward but not backwards in neutral.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | these transmissions are fairly east to yank. the 3 bolts up top kinda suck but pretty straight forward. mark the shift cable with white paint though. it should go back near similar depth. need to use a little screwdriver to push the clip back on the shift cable. you need the instructions..

Maybe a stuck clutch or band from sitting a while. Was it running when grandma parked it?

Veteran Posts: 111 | My cousin was the last one driving it to and from work back in 1985. Since then he moved to DE and had the car towed down there. He then needed a garage so had it bright back to NJ and had an issue getting it backed into the garage as it wouldn’t free wheel in reverse in neutral back then. I know it’s not the rear as I disconnected the drive shaft and the car rolls forward and back. It’s either something in the parking brake or internal inside the trans.

Veteran Posts: 111 | We tried pushing it backwards and even rocking it back and forth thinking it was something stuck that might spring back in place like a stuck starter gear but no luck. My next step is to pull the parking brake drum and see what’s going on, if anything, with that.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 371 | Raise it up and take off the little inspection cover and see if the cable is getting hung up. This is what happened to mine.

Veteran Posts: 111 | Cable is not hung up. Pulled the drum off it and tried to spin the output shaft again. Still only goes one way. Something is binding up inside the trans.

Veteran Posts: 111 | So Jim Rawa rebuilt our trans and found that the planetary gears were seized. The whole back half of the trans was cooked. Its been rebuilt and reinstalled now and just trying to get time to get it all back together with the cables and fluid into the trans. He did one hell of a job on the trans ! Can't wait to get the car mobile under its own power again since 1985 !

Veteran Posts: 111 | Yup. He has a ton of trans parts so he was able to fix it and even upgrade it fortunately!
