I’ve seen a lot of things, but this was a new one. I went to pull the coil wire to perform a compression test and found that it was just laying on top of the cap. It was still inside the port, which had detached itself from the rest of the cap. The area around it in the center of the cal was all ash and burnt plastic. Believe it or not, the car was still running. No idea what caused this. The rest of the cap looked relatively okay, as did the rotor.
Thoughts?

yes
just about every time this happens the wire was not pushed in all the way to make contact with the metal. The other possible reason is the wire was bad and was arcing inside itself.
