It seems that from the factory there are no exhaust manifold gaskets used. My exhaust manifolds’ port surfaces, are in poor shape from being run by the PO for a period of time with some broken studs. This resulted in a rough, pitted port surface. Would exhaust gaskets work in this instance. I will be running a straight edge also to check for flatness.

Hi John,

Unless you are getting both surfaces skimmed flat, use the gaskets, they may look flat but will be slightly warped, just put this one on a flatbed sander to show,

Paul.

Thanks for the tip. One more thing, factory service manual says to torque 30ft.lbs. Would I be assuming correctly that I should torque a little more since I will be crushing gaskets?

The amount of applied torque is generally determined by the bolt diameter, in your case, 3/8" diameter. 30lbs is a good number with the gasket.
