I’ve recovered some of the information from my ’56 Plymouth’s data tag, but now I’m unable to recall the website with the codes. If anyone knows the website or has the codes, I’d really appreciate any help.

The codes I’m having problems with are BT=866, PT=651, TR=514, SG=1, M3=4, M5=5, M6=1, M8=2 and M9=3

FWIW, it’s a P29-3 Sport Coupe, 277 V8, manual 3-speed with Overdrive, power brakes, but no AC, power steering, windows, or seats, black and white exterior and interior.

It was built in Los Angeles on Dec. 5th, 1956 and was the 3,288th Plymouth built in LA that model year.

The data tag is badly rusted, so I might have misread a number or two.

Unfortunately, that is a 1956 Los Angeles plant cowl data tag and the few of us (56D500boy, Powerflite (Nathan), RDP and frwl) who have been trying to figure them out are still struggling with the M codes

That said:

BT =866 is a V8 1956 Belvedere 2dr hardtop (Body Type)

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74362&...

PT=651 = Paint Code 651 = Briar Rose (a pink). Seems to be a single tone, no different roof colour (so black and white was not the original paint) Similar to this but all pink:

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74514&...

TR = 514 = Trim Code, Probably the Black and White "Aztek" trim:

SG = 1 is probably Solex (tinted) glass (it should say something like SOLEX Ducolite etched into it)

RDP has tried to figure out some of the M codes:

It definitely had Solex marked on the remaining original pieces.

I must be reading the paint code incorrectly, but it has always been a black and white car. there were too many covered places that showed the original paint. The only area that appeared to have metal repair was the right rear quarter panel, and it had apparently been minor damage as there was no filler of any kind. There were places that had received primer and black and white repaint, but after dip-stripping, there was no indication of metal repairs in any of those areas, and no pink anywhere on the body.

Help us (and you) by running some sand paper over your cowl data tag.

It will take something like this (a 55 Dodge tag)

To a slightly more readable version like this (which might expose the paint code better (661 would be black and white)):

I see a paint code 661 (not a 651), it is definitely the paint code 661 that deciphering «Eggshell White over Jet Black»,
White roof and sportone insert and black basic color, something like this below;
What kind of color your trim? Is it white vinyl bolsters and black Aztec cloth?

Nathan bought same ’56 Belvedere 2 Door Hardtop in 2020, and posted the picture of cowl tag, with some my guessing and his confirmations. Here the link:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74478&...

I’ll try to help you to decode M-codes with comparison of Nathan’s cowl tag codes and hope your feedback about it.
So, SG1
As noticed Dave above, it is Solex Tinted Glass (order code 361) that you confirmed; OR it is might be an Special Group (Accessory Group #1) that included: Rain Shield, Cigar Lighter, Wheel Covers, Directional Signals and Glove Box Lock. Do you have any option of these?

M3 = 4
I guess that is a Roof Rail Drip Molding and Windshield Upper Molding (order code 424) that present on Nathan’s car also – see picture below. Fury has Drip Molding as standard, while Windshield Molding was optional on both. Do you have these items on your car?

M5 = 5
Initially I guess it is Deluxe Steering Wheel (5 = code 445 means Black, 6 = 446 means White). Nathan’s car has Black Deluxe Steering Wheel, but column M5 is empty. It also might be an Accessory Group #5 that consists Accessory Groups #1 and #3 both. Besides AG#1 items listed above, the group #3 includes Back Up Lights, Windshield Washers and Variable Speed Windshield Wiper; Do you have these? BUT you told your cars has Power Brakes (code 365), so I guess M5 code deciphering it. Nathan’s car has not power brakes and M5 is empty.

M6 = 1
I guessed and Nathan confirmed the Electric Clock in his car – see picture below. Do you have a clock on the dash?

M8 = 2
It is very interesting and most discussed item! We (me, Dave and Robert) have very big discussion about it; all 100% cowl tags we have seen have M8 = 3 codes with no alternative. Only one Robert posted ’56 Dodge tag with M8 = 2 with no comments about car which has it. Your tag is a second. Since beginning of our discussion I have assumed this is Transmission. You told your car has Manual Transmission with Overdrive, so I guess M8 = 2 (code 352) mean it definitely. Nathan’s car equipped with Powerflite Automatic Transmission and his M8 = 3 (code 353). DAVE, ROBERT WHAT DO YOU THINK?

M9 = 3
A Delivery Route from factory to dealer. I see 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 in this box. The 8 is delivered by Rail. No idea what route is «3».

Hope this will help somehow, and I will wait for your feedback to my questions.

Gary, if you have a copy of the IBM card and can share it would be very helpful.

Thanks everyone for your interest and help!

Sorry, RDP, I do not have the IBM card.

56D500boy, the data tag is stored away in the garage attic, and I couldn’t quickly find it. When the weather improves I’ll look again.

Frwl, besides the Solex glass, I must have the Special Group as it has what I assume is the Rain Shield, and it has a Cigar Lighter, Directional Signals and Glove Box Lock. Wheels are aftermarket, so I can’t speak to the full wheel covers.

Yes, I do have the optional visor windshield molding, the drip rail molding, and I think the rain shield is the little aluminum part that is attached to the top corner of the vent window frame. It is not installed in the picture you posted.

The steering wheel is white, though most of the plastic was long gone and I am not using that wheel. I also have backup lights, windshield washers and variable speed wipers.

I’m sure it also had the Power Pak option. Although I got it without an engine, the dual muffler shields and tailpipe hangers look stock.

The radio was a basic pushbutton without the Search Tune feature and no rear speakers.

The upholstery is the white vinyl with Aztec fabric, but the entire interior was badly water damaged and unsalvageable.

The delivery route code interests me, because the more I know about this car, the more I’m inclined to believe it was a customer special order. If it was dealer ordered for the showroom, the Power Pak with Overdrive transmission would not be typical choices. It also has manual steering and based on the power steering reputation for performance driving, it could explain the somewhat unusual combination of options. I wonder if the #3 delivery code might indicate a customer factory pickup?

Thanks again!
