Expert 5K+ Posts: 9605 Location: So. Cal | There are two versions. That one is made from aluminum & quite common. It's a very simple part that mounts with trim screws onto the panel. There is also a "bumper guard" version that is made from thick steel and is much harder to obtain. I am not at home at the moment, but I could take pictures of it next week when I get back; if someone else can't help you before that.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9605 Location: So. Cal | Yes, the version that Dave posted is the "bumper guard" option for the DeSoto. It is hard to get today, so I guess that not many chose to pay for it. The standard non-option version is the thin aluminum piece.

Elite Veteran Posts: 640 Location: Finland | I am quite sure the thin ones are pot metal. Sorry for Marko I threw away a couple of weak cores last summer. I made new ones for my Firedome from stainless. The result was driver grade but much better than without. I made them of 2mm stainless plate.

If I was going to make one I would solder one together from three pieces of brass and have it chromed. Any chance that you could tell us the part number on that one. I can't read it very well. I see 173? ?4? or something. The closest that I can see in the 55-58 Parts catalog is 1735 646 or 1735 647 (??) I just want to find what they are called by the parts book.

Member Posts: 36 Location: Finland | Thank you for nice pics Scottbit! I was planning to do it from one piece and chromed it later. One chance is of course use stainless and polish it. But it would be quite difficult to weld pieces together nicely.

Veteran Posts: 166 | Part number is `175651 There are low temperature solders that work well on stainless steel. I have had good results with Certanium 34C You can buy it on ebay. Another alternative to chrome plating is the peel and stick vinyl wrap that they use on the chrome car body wraps.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9605 Location: So. Cal | The Certanium 34C is interesting. I hadn't heard of it before. The name is misleading though. It sounds like it melts at 34C, but is actually at 221C - similar to many no-lead solders. Since pot metal typically melts at around 400C, this could be used to repair pot metal parts. To me, the really interesting part of what they claim, is that it even solders well to chrome plated parts. MuggyWeld, which is silver based and expensive, requires you to unplate the parts beforehand because their solder won't stick to chrome. Have you tried to use this for pot metal repairs? What type of flux do you need to use with it?

Could you please try the number again? There needs to be 7 numbers. I guessed that you meant 1735 651 but that was way wrong. Veteran Posts: 166 | Part number is 1756 519 I have never tried to use 34C on pot metal. I will give it a try and let you know how it works. On stainless I just use standard paste flux, I hit the stainless with a clean 120 grit flap wheel and then apply the flux, seems to work best with indirect heat, no direct flame. There are stainless specific soldering fluxes but I have not tried them. Certanium 34C also chrome plates well unlike MuggyWeld.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9855 Location: Lower Mainland BC | scottbit - 2022-02-06 12:54 PM Part number is 1756 519 Thanks, that number was a winner. I would have never found it because they hid it in Section 8, Electrical. Not Section 13, which has the bumper and grill stuff. "Quarter Panel Extension, except Sub., w/o Bumper Guards" 1756 518 (even number = right), 1756 519 (odd number = left) Edited by 56D500boy 2022-02-06 4:20 PM (1756519.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 1756519.jpg (164KB - 110 downloads)

Elite Veteran Posts: 1140 Location: Blackpool, United Kingdom. | These are the other type, they are heavy guage same as bumper, they bolt to the holes in the side of bumper, I was going to get them made from fiberglass same as the Plymouth bumper wings a few years back but no one seemed interested in them? Expert 5K+ Posts: 9605 Location: So. Cal | I would be interested in a metal reproduction, not in fiberglass. I have a set of them on my pink firedome that I may use as a template to make 3 more sets for my other cars.

Member Posts: 36 Location: Finland | For next summer i leave these like this. Parts won't fit like a gloves, because there has done some bodywork earlier (Mostly on driver side, fender is also out of model on lower corner). I made different kind of mountings just because i want to hide them better. I finished trims next winter, when i send some other parts to re-chromed also. Because it was easy to do, i change tail light lenses and those cover plates also.
