I was experiencing the classic delayed engagement into Drive, (Reverse engages strongly and instantly). I let it go for awhile but it got progressively worse to the point that it took about 10 minutes of runtime before it would engage Drive. I decided to do an R&R on the transmission, as when I removed the pan I found some debris (And what looks like an entire, albeit very annihilated) O-Ring. Taking the transmission apart on the bench, I've not really found anything I would identify as a smoking gun, most of the transmission was actually quite clean inside, except for this suspicious looking wear between Unit 1 (Output Shaft, Kick Down Planet Pinion Carrier) and Unit 2 (Sun Gear, Reverse Planet Pinion Carrier). It looks like the 2 faces of these units were in contact. The manual mentions "Caution: Make sure front clutch and sun gear thrust washer remain in position in front of unit". I took that to refer to the OTHER side of the Sun Gear assembly, where there was in fact a washer with 2 tabs on it. The only thing that I see that could act as a spacer here is the needle bearing thrust washer betweeen the 2 units?

There should be a thin steel washer between those unitts

I think I see the washer on Don Veritys page, thanks! I've got a spare, albeit much later 466 tranny I can hopefully rob the washer from. Hopefully these parts are still serviceable, the spare had been sitting outside for about 30 years and may have little left to give...
