I recently came into possession of some 1956 Ross Roy Dodge versus the world Bulletins. In one of them, Ross Roy compares the new Dodge front seat belt system to the Ford system. It looks like the Dodge (and I guess all the other 56 Mopars) used a system that had a bar attached to cables that were attached to the body mounting bolts with the seat belts attached to this bar.

I understand how that would work if the seat never moved and the cables from the body mounts to the bar were tensioned. However, the information suggests that the front seat could be moved fore and aft without causing problems with the seat belt system. I am having problems understanding how that would work.

Anybody with a 1956 Mopar OE factory seat belt system who can educate me on this? (Thanks).

What I "know":

My guess is that, as the cables were obviously not tensioned, in case of an accident, retaining the passenger would happen in 2 phases:

1) for a small shock, the seat belts attached to the bar would retain the passenger
2) for an more intense shock, would the seat bench move forward, the cables would allow some movement before retaining the structure (and the passenger)
