Imagine that you poking around someone's hoard to old Mopar parts and you are looking for a good Coaxial steering box for your 55 or 56 Mopar.:)

Sure, it's easy to figure out what's what, *IF* the steering box is still *IN* the donor car. But what if the steering boxes have been removed from the cars and are just in a big pile, then how are you going to figure things out?

Well, it turns out that it is not too difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. All we need is a few clues.

It would be helpful if the pile of steering boxes was at least sorted into Mopar, GM, Ford, etc. and you can concentrate on just the Mopar pile.

Assuming that to be true, the first trick is the Coaxial steering gear boxes were in cast aluminum housings and therefore, you are looking for boxes that appear to be at least a bit silver(ish) under, no doubt, grime.

I think that they will also tend to be long and slender but the aluminum/silver is the main sorting clue.

Assuming that you now have a smaller pile of aluminum/silver slender things, what is the next sorting clue?

I just learned this one this AM. The main one is the plate on the upside of where the Pitman arm gear comes out of the box is triangular on a 55-56 Chrysler/Desoto coaxial steering box and circular on 55-56 Dodge/Plymouth coaxial steering box. That will be the main thing. The Chrysler/Desoto boxes are likely larger in girth and length than the Dodge/Plymouth boxes and the Dodge/Plymouth boxes have a weird cast loop that the Chrysler/Desoto boxes do not seem to have. (Not sure why that loop is there...(???)) (Someone has suggested, off-line, that might be for the manual shifter rod location (??))

Here are some diagrams and photos of the two varieties of 55-56 coaxial steering boxes, starting with the Chrysler/Desoto followed by the Dodge/Plymouth.

Hope that helps somebody.

Chrysler/Desoto (and then Dodge/Plymouth):

I adjusted the play in my P/S steering box until I felt it was dragging and did not return to center. I still have an inch of play in the wheel. I bought a steering gear tube insulator at the suggestion of Andy Birnbaum Parts, but I cannot locate this part in the diagram

Like these (shorter and longer versions) (I think that the shorter version is PN 1319 797, as listed in Section 19-15-10 of the 1955-58 Mopar Parts catalogue:

Today, on behalf of another FL forum member, I picked up 55-56 Dodge/Plymouth coaxial steering box which was acquired from third FL member (I am just acting as the middle man).

Before I pass the coaxial box on to the intended recipient, I wanted to document some of the dimensions and also try to figure out the threads for the high pressure input hose.

I was able to document the major dimensions but I was not successful in determining the fittings for the high pressure hose. This particular coaxial box is missing the threaded adapter bushing into which the tube nut on the end of the high pressure hose would screw into. I *think* (??) that the PN of this adapter bushing *might* be 1618 610 but I can't find one to confirm.

Here are the annotated photos of what I could measure. I was quite surprised about the splines on the Pitman Arm shaft. I expected them to be much courser and fewer of them. I reality, there are 4 clusters of 8 fine splines, with these four clusters each separated by a wide spline space, similar to the single wide spline space of the 55-56 Dodge/Plymouth steering wheels.

If any body can point me towards information about the threaded adapter bushing, it will be appreciated (Thanks ):

Took the coaxial box to a local hydraulic fitting/hose shop this afternoon to see it they could figure things out.

Which they did.

That "bushing" is likely NOT a simple bushing but rather a #04 Male JIC x #05 Male ORB - straight , as shown in the photos below.

So that would make the end of the pressure hose a JIC Female Swivel, either 90 deg or 45 deg, as shown below.

The return hose fitting is likely to be something like an N4604-08-08, #8 Male ORB x #8 beaded male 1/2" hose barb as shown below. Not sure about the return hose I.D. (yet).

Progress (and a learning curve for me);)

Here are some photo of the PS fluid return discharge port at the lower end of the 55-56 Dodge/Plymouth coaxial steering box. Not sure if it makes sense but I measure 0.66nn inches for the discharge opening. Based on the AN fitting size chart below, I don't know it No. 8 Male ORB is going to be correct or not.

When I did this post initially, I failed to add a photo of the actual attachment of the coupler (Item 57 in the first parts diagram and labeled as 19-15-23 in the diagram below) to the coaxial steering gear box. The attachment is via a bolt (and washer and lock washer) from the open end of the coupler. I need these photos for a post that I am going to do specifically about the rubber portion of the coupling system and this was an appropriate location to upload them.

Lots of good stuff in this:

https://mymopar.com/mtsc-1955-volume-8-3-servicing-the-1955-coaxial-...

Including a photo at around 7:10 that shows accessing the upper end of the coaxial box to allow adjustment of the control piston.

Found an actual *used* Chrysler/Desoto Coaxial Steering box on eBay today while looking for something else. Saved some of the photos.

Note the triangular top plate (as opposed to the round top plate on the Dodge/Plymouth boxes).

Note also the rubber cushion in the coupler and the spring at the top of the shaft.
