Subject: 56 desoto firedome front Seat removal

Location: NY		Anyone have any tips on how to pull the front bench seat? The shop manual does not appear to address it, if it does I can find it.

I have a wagon but I think the front is the same as the sedan.

Location: Chestertown, NY ( near Lake George)		May be different, but the lower cushion lifts right out of the seat frame on my old 55 New Yorker.

Assuming that a 56 Desoto is similar to a 56 Dodge, this is what I would do:

1. Grab the seat bottom and pull up at one end, then the other, then pull up together and ease the seat bottom out of the frame and surround.

2. Remove the two-piece cosmetic seat base surround (several Phillips head screws on each side). Pull each side out and set safely aside. Keep the screws you removed safe (e.g. a labeled baggy).

3. Remove the bolts that hold the seat base to the car. Two pedestals per side, probably 2 to 4 bolts per pedestal. The bolts go into captured nuts that were welded to the floor pan at the factory.

4. Find a friend and lift the seat out (back is still attached). Probably easiest to go out the passenger door. Tilt and struggle as necessary

5. Place seat frame and bolts in a safe place.

At least that is what I did.

Location: So. Cal		Good luck, it's not as easy as it should be. You can remove the seat bolts without removing the cosmetic part, but it isn't easy to access the outer bolts. And that cosmetic surround is always rusted.

Location: NY		All great info, thanks very much. Was able to get the cushion out, currently working on the seat itself
