Member Posts: 17 | Looks like there is a slot, but I don't want to break these plastic covers trying to replace some bulbs. A picture of the back side of the lense would give me a better idea how they are secured (Compress_20220422_131331_1893.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Compress_20220422_131331_1893.jpg (229KB - 96 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9899 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Based on my 56 Dodge and what I see on the internet, the dome light lenses are held into the chrome housings by tabs on the plastic lenses that fit into slots in the chrome housings. Gently squeeze/pry to remove. Remember 60 year old plastic is brittle. Member Posts: 17 | I did see the lenses online, but could not see the backside on the end that looks like I need to pop it out from. The other end has a long tab that looks like it only slides out once the other end is popped loose.

The other end has a long tab that looks like it only slides out once the other end is popped loose. You won't learn anything by seeing the back of the housing. Based on your photo (no idea how you were able to post a huge 4000 x 3000 pixel photo) (which I have now resized to 1024 x 768), I think your answer is find a 1" wide putty knife and pry the non-tab end of the lens towards the tab end (left in the photo) and then lift up. There will be a slight lip on the housing that the right end of the lens is sitting in. Once you have the right end clear, then just pull the lens to the right until the tab exits the slot in the housing. Member Posts: 17 | Yeah, sorry the picture was a little big. I had compressed it in an app. Thanks for the input. If anyone can get me a picture of the back of this lense, it would be much appreciated

Looks like some kind of ball n socket style connection That's great news (for you). It just confirms that the non-tab side is held in more or less by friction. As I suggested before, the removal will require prying up the non-tab end with a wide pry (1" putty knife ?). That force will pull the "ball" at the end of that short pedestal out of the "socket" that is part of the metal housing. Given the age of the plastic, there is no guarantees that part of the ball won't break. Even if it does, you will be able to re-install the lens using a dab of clear (or white) silicone caulking where the ball sat (and some masking tape to hold the lens in place until the silicone sets up). Two related things: 1. Once the lens is off, it will expose the two screws that hold the housing to the frame rail. That will permit you to remove the housing to clean and polish it or get it rechromed. 2. When replacing the bulb, consider using an LED bulb. They produce less plastic-killing heat and will last a long time so you won't have to remove the lens again for a long long time. Edited by 56D500boy 2022-04-23 11:42 AM

Member Posts: 17 | I was able to carefully get the lense off without breaking it. Here is a picture of the back of the lense. It is like a three prong tip that smashes as it is pushed into the corresponding hole in the metal base. How about a photo of the base so we can see the base and the receptical for that three-pronged tip ?

Member Posts: 17 | Couple more pictures including the bulb holder(chrome), and the plastic lense. You can see the slot on one side of the chrome holder for the plastic tab and the hole on the other end for the post to pop into (Compress_20220427_131658_8627.jpg) (Compress_20220427_131659_9200.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Compress_20220427_131658_8627.jpg (205KB - 103 downloads) Compress_20220427_131659_9200.jpg (217KB - 92 downloads)

Member Posts: 17 | I used a little bit of Bon Ami cleaner to get the heavy stuff, then polished them up. Pretty happy with how they turned out. Picture makes it look a little bit nicer than they are. Very light pitting, but much improved.

Try some AutoSol (or Wenol) And/or Quick Glo (Jay Leno seems to like it): REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69375&...
