Lots of attention to detail up top. Not so much on the undercarriage

I wonder how well those air shocks work (??)

Why does the vinyl on the seats look like it just woke up after a bad night of drinking?

Otherwise, a beautiful car.

If you read the write-up, the owners' wife did the upholstery. I'm guessing she doesn't do this professionally....

That`s a lovely car...beautiful colours.
The interior is very nice...looks authentic and not as if nobody has been sitting on it as some mega dollar interiors do.

Yeah. That interior would need to be redone. Looks amateurish. Also, the car originally came with a dash pad, which is now missing. I'd want to see the paint quality before dropping big bucks on this one. That said, I'm thinking it's gonna bring 65-70K.

Nah, it'll stall at about $32-35k. If it exceeds $45k I'd be shocked.

I once took a furniture upholstery class and I think what the wife missed was a layer of polyester padding immediately under the vinyl to "puff" the vinyl out.
That and maybe a hair drier to heat and relax those wrinkles out of the vinyl.

Bottomline: I think that upholstery could be improved without totally redoing it.

The thing that separates professionals from amateurs is knowing their craft, rather than winging it, like this guy's wife did. Obtaining and using the right padding and padding thickness, professional quality sewing machine vs home machine, steam tool to expand the vinyl, so that when it cools down, it will wrap itself around the padding, resulting in a professional quality appearance.

It's similar to using professional paint spraying equipment vs. buying a bunch of rattle cans from Home Depot.

Ouch. That hurt.

But at least I only spent about $300 on my rattle cans vs $10K-$15K on a professional job.

And I bought them at an automotive parts store, not Home Depot.

Love how the rear view mirror is part of the side trim in 56. Looks as if the car is always moving

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. You must have a guilty conscience.

But, yeah, if you lack body and paint skills, 10-15K+ is about right. OTOH, if you do the work yourself and you're good, you can do bodywork and a high quality paint job for under 5K. It all depends on what your goals are. I want to show a car that has high quality work. So I'm willing to put out the $$$$$ to make that happen.

Roberlo filler is 59$ a gallon... best stuff out there... Single stage TCP restoration shop is similar priced... 225$ for the one gallon kit...

I've used PPG, HOK, Evercoat and all the other stuff... TCP works great compared... and went out of their way to mix the old colors...

NO guilty conscience here. Quite happy with my work and the amount of money I have avoided wasting on a daily driver (not show car) that
I don't have to freak out about somebody or thing messing with my car's paint. I can fix any glitches if they occur (And they will, or have already).

Exactly. If it goes over 40, someone didn't look under the car or look at the pictures closely.

I think fully restored you might reach some of the bigger numbers, even then wagons have shown a cap of around 75k for the best cars.

If I understand correctly, the Paint Code XE3 on the cowl tag should be:
Jade – Roof
Jade – Upper (Saddle)
Pearl – Lower
Pearl – Fins

Actually, this car has finished in Paint Code XE4:
Pearl – Roof
Jade – Upper (Saddle)
Pearl – Lower
Pearl – Fins

Incorrect repaint?

Yep. You and Mike called it.

Also, yes the car had the roof color changed to white. Also, swivel seats appear to have been added at some point.

Calling that interior "amateur" is just mean and uncalled for. Some people can't say anything nice. That is far from amateur by anyone's standards.

We found this car in a field of estate cars above Banning CA years ago and sold it to John, who listed it on Bring a Trailer. It is a solid Bay area wagon that received new paint and installation of NOS seat covers from Original Interiors and replacement door panels from SMS. John and his wife worked hard to improve the solid driver. We had Sean go through it mechanically during our ownership. Sean recognized it as a car that had gone through Ernie and Gary yard in Colton, like so many. The top color was changed (improvement in my book) and a swivel seat was installed by John from a parts car 300E we had. I am thrilled to now learn that the wagon was bought by a car buddy who may keep it as a driver or bring it to his show car mates standards. It is a worthy showy car already. I agree, people can be mean in how they comment on cars. There are ways to say something is different or changed or needs adjustment or is a scam when appropriate, and there are words that are mean.

I didn't buy it because the vin tag was screwed on and in my state, that makes it an epic pain in the ass.
