Expert 5K+ Posts: 7385 Location: northern germany | Rear tire blow out. First for me in 37 years driving. Had two flats before but that happened over night in my garage. Very unpleasant. This is usually my high speed stretch of road, 2 miles from home, fortunately I was doing only around 70mph. Called a buddy (Ford guy) with a spare wheel, but we couldn't get it (255) between disc/caliper and wheel opening, The heavy sway bar kept the axle up. So we got one of my emergency BMW steel rims from home. Heck.... I always knew the wheels I'm running spoil the Forwardlook-look. It looks much, MUCH better with the wheel deeper in the wheel housing. Will get new rims now, with a bigger ET (offset). Expert 5K+ Posts: 7385 Location: northern germany | Weird, looking at the pictures it just dawned on me, that it happened just opposite the tree my mother hit in 1991 with her Lancia and they just cut down. For some reason I took a picture of the stump couple of days ago, parking the Fury just a few yards away.... Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I'm glad you came out of it unscathed. I've had 3-4 blowouts at high speed and they seem to hold up much better than you would expect. But I was never taking corners at the time. If I were turning at high speed, it could end up pretty ugly.

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: New Castle PA | Glad you're OK. What was the cause? Scrap on the road that punctured the tire?

The hole looked like from a large nail, with the head making an imprint in the tires thread. Couple of hours later I remembered, that I heard a loud clang from the back just before the blow out. I guess is was the nail that hit the wheel housing. The hole was pretty big, but it seems to hold air after I fixed it with one of those cheap tire repair kits.

I wish I could say I saved the car with my drving skills, but, I think I could have taken the hands off the steering wheel after the blow out. Just the vibration, road shock and noise was very scary. I guess the 1 extra inch of rim height with my 16" over the 14" stock wheels helped a bit. I heard horror storys about REAR tire blow outs, making the car allegedly un-steerable, not in this case at least. I guess at 150 mph it is another story.
