On the web looking for car parts.

Found Andy Bernbaum now offers a disk brake conversion kit.

Any thoughts based on writeup (photos will follow later once I can get them loaded) whether it equates to either Scarebird or AAJ?

Description -

Disc Brake Conversion Kit for all the 1957-1961 Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler and DeSoto full size cars.

Our front disc conversion kits are the best in the industry, are virtually all inclusive, and bolt up directly to your stock MoPar spindles.

They are made in the USA.

Our hubs are built with the stock MoPar bolt pattern. That is 5 lug with a 4 1/2 “ bolt pattern. Please note that stock wheels may not be compatible with our disc kits as space is needed to clear the calipers and rotors. You will need a minimum 13 ¼”outside diameter on the back side of your wheel, that is on a flat plane with the lug bolt holes. Some customers have successfully “ground” just a bit off the corners of the calipers and used the kit with their stock wheels. Late model Mopar wheels and virtually all aftermarket wheels will work great.

Moderate mechanical ability is required for installation. If you can use two wrenches simultaneously you can install our kits. No machining is required, and clear and concise installation instructions are included.

Our Kits include:

Aluminum hubs with grease caps
New GM rotors and “big piston” calipers and pads
All mounting bolts, seals, bearings, caliper mounting brackets and attaching hardware
Flexible brake hoses
New dual chamber master cylinder
All bracketing and hardware to install the new master cylinder in the original location, and with correct interface with stock pedal system.
Correct metering valves to maintain appropriate residual pressure in system. This is critical and is why many “home built” conversion kits don’t work properly!
* New Brake Light Switch

Installation instructions
Kits do not include:

Brake fluid
Tube nuts
Grease

I can't comment until I know the rotor size and caliper piston size. But I can say that $1100 is way more than most kits.

Yeah, that's crazy money considering other kits use less expensive rotors with built-in hubs.

I do like the 2-piece hub/rotor.
AAJ & Scarebird use 1-piece.

Didn't one or both of AAJ and/or Scarebird do hubs that worked with some Ford rotor (without a hub?)

I think both AAJ an Scarebird's current 57-61 Mopar kits use 77 Cordoba rotors (quite inexpensive) through Rock Auto.

Tried the above link, it didnt work, but if you shorten it, it does

https://www.ecihotrodbrakes.com/

I think I have this kit and will be fitting it to my 60 plymouth soonish (I have had the car in pieces for 11 years now, so soon is a relative term )

Thanks for the link though as I had no idea who made it and I need that info for the engineering approval I will need once the car is ready to go back on the road

WOW! I bought this same kit (two of them) on ebay about 16 years ago from the guy that made it (and the other copies he was auctioning off). They were advertised to fit 1955/56 Desoto and Chrysler (also 1957-61). just this year I unpacked the kit to install on my 55 Desoto only to discover that the adaptor plates are for the 56 and later 4 bolt hole spindles (my 55 is the early 3 bolt on). As such I have been running one set on eBay Auction for $650 (less then my original cost) with no bites? At the time I originally bought these - all the the copies sold out fast. This is my eBay listing # 325350094582 . If any one out there interested in the sets I have contact me, I'm new (as a registered person to Forward Look) to this list and not familiar on how to contact me direct.

Welcome to the forward look board Ken! You can also create a post in the "for sale" section on this site to advertise your brake kit sale.
It would be great if you started a new thread in the "member rides" area to show your beautiful '55 Plymouth convertible or your '55 DeSoto.

I still believe that adding another caliper per wheel like that guy in France did, it could be a real stopper. Unfortunately nobody want to try it.

I fitted my kit yesterday and have issues

I need to go and measure the rotors and compare it to the above.

Once I have put it all on, I tried 14" cragar ss wheels I have and they are to small, but I thought they might be, so
I put 15" cragar ss wheels on, and they also dont fit.

The issue is the ends of the calliper where the brake pad pins go through rub (or jamb) on the shoulder of the rim.

The instructions I have call for spacing washers to be fitted between the calliper bracket and the spindle, removing these might help a bit,
I think its still going to interfere with the wheel and it will affect the calliper alignment, but I will try that today.

I also notice that in the picture from Dels56, that it looks like the ends of the callipers have been rounder off, this may also help.

To fit the wheels on, I ended up putting spacing washers between the hub and the wheel so I could move the sub frame. I think I need to find 8mm to get clearance.

The calipers are untouched out of the box, no grinding to allow for clearance. I am not near my shop but will see if I can find a sketch that I made of the wheel. I know I did not have an issue with clearance. If I don’t find a sketch I wlll make one and post it later in April. Busy with other stuff until then.

P/S I will also start a thread on my designed rear wheel disc brake conversion for the tapered axle 56 Dodge. The proto type mock up fit, now I am just waiting for the machine shop to crank out the real thing.

Make sure you are using disc brake wheels. There are 15" wheels made for drum brakes that will have similar issues that the 14" wheels have. Also, some wheels have excess welding blobs that will hit the caliper. You can grind those off to smooth it out. But you didn't say which kit you are using to make any comparisons with.

I have had to grind some material off the corners of the calipers on some conversions on GM cars in my shop. Maybe 60- 80 thousands. Every car and combo of parts is different.

The kit is the same kit as the picture above

I did not purchace the kit, but I believe it cam from Andy Bernbaum (ECI kit)

It all bolted up fine, but when I tried to fit the wheels, thats when I ran into problems.

The wheel contacts all the way around, I can only get it to turn if I space the wheel away from the hub by about 8mm.

You can see in the picture the end of the calliper is very close to the shoulder of the rim. It only misses because I have washers spacing the wheel out. The end of the calliper bolt you can
see is high enough to clear the shoulder, its the "meat" that the bolt goes through. I think I would need to grind a fair bit of the rim side of that meat to get clearance and with this work
having to pass engineering scrutiny before I can get it registered (on the road), better to try again later.

I will most likely just put the drums back on. I am trying to push forward on getting this car done, so I will put this in the too hard basket
and have another go at it once its a road registered car.

Just frustrating. Those hubs are great, but maybe I will look into callipers from a different car that arnt so chunky, but a game for later
