Question: What material could be used between the top of the gas tank and the body on my 56 Dodge Custom Royal?

When I pulled the tank off some time ago there was a "piece" of some type of material and not much left on top of the tank to insulate/cushion the tank. I have installed the tank without anything for now but I am thinking there should be something there. Good Yoga Mats are Fire Retardant and Mildew Proof. If nothing else is available, that is an option.

I believe it is the same oil cloth material that is used between the top and bottom halves of the trunk lid.

If you use a piece of 1/8" sheet rubber, you'll be fine.

Del: When I re-installed my 56 Dodge gas tank after having it cleaned and lined, I used some sticky sheet cork tiles (about 1/8" thick) to insulate/cushion the top of the tank from the bottom of the trunk. I think rubber or foam would work fine too.

HOWEVER, I think that whatever you use you want it to NOT ABSORB water, i.e. closed cell foam (not open cell) or rubber, like roofing material.

Somehow I didn't take any photos so I can't remember exactly how much of the top of the tank I applied the cork to.

Hi, Thanks for your responses, I have been surfing since posting my question and it appears newer vehicles still have a pad between the tank and body. A company, https://www.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/fuel-gas-tank-pad/ have pads for bunches of vehicles. Made from .090" masticated rubber. (Masticated Rubber is a rubber compound made of reclaimed/ recycled. natural or synthetic rubber. The term masticated rubber has come to mean a mixture of recycled rubber and fiber.) With this information in hand, obviously I did not know what Masticated Rubber is, I will use a couple layers of EPDM that I have lots of on hand.

"DMT OEM style felt paper gas tank pad "

(EPDM will be a fine substitute)

I always use 30-pound roofing felt. It's just an anti-squeak liner.
