How do i remove the steering column from the steering gear box
on a 56 Plymouth ?

Assuming you are talking about a non-power column as it is pretty rare for a '56 Plymouth to have power steering. Remove the steering wheel. Remove the turn signal switch assembly from the column. Remove the c-clip at the top of the shaft. Loosen the clamp at the bottom and pull the column upward, off the box & shaft while feeding the horn wire through it's hole. This is best done with the whole column outside the car because the shaft is so long that you probably can't lift the car high enough unless you have access to a lift. The only part you should do inside is to remove the steering wheel.
