I have a 58 Fireflite. I only seem to have reverse when the car is warmed up. She starts great and all forward gears work even low. But put it into reverse and nothing. Wait a few minutes and it will pop in. Fluid is clean and at the right level.
Could this be needing a band adjustment. it has been getting worse over the last couple weeks.
Thanks all
AL

A band adjustment isn't likely to help as it is the same adjustment for reverse and low.

The seals in the servo are most likely bad and seal better as warm fluid expands them just enough to apply the band.

Thanks...after checking again it does have touch to much fluid on the dipstick maybe I will drain a bit out and see if it helps.
Is it just a seal or the whole reverse servo piston?
Also just realized I put in full synthetic oil...could this be the difference?
Thanks again
AL

I agree, and don't confuse 1st gear in Drive with manual Low (1).

Try putting a bottle of Trans X in. It softens the internal trans seals. I had a 57 Dodge that would sometimes take a few mins to engage in Drive. Trans X fixed it.

Thanks Bob it is amazing the difference in opinions on what to use for fluid. I read many posts and not really a solid choice. I drained the fluid as I was not sure what was in it when I bought it and had added some ATF synthetic as well . I filled it with Type F and I noticed a huge difference right away. I really don't think the trans likes the new synthetic stuff.
