Elite Veteran Posts: 943 | Does the kickdown on a '57 Torqueflite have a seal that can leak? I'm trying to chase down some leaks in this area. And does anyone know the exact diameter on the O ring for the cable or where to get it? Thanks

Regular Posts: 57 Location: Springfield, MO | This is from another post. I am pretty sure the 59 and 57 likely use similar if not the same kickdown. "Another overlooked leakage area more especially on the 59 on models is the the shaft seal on the kickdown. I have experienced of late no end of leakages in this area, the seal in a lot of cases is put in the wrong way- easily done- so there goes the first starting area. Secondly as these 60+ year old autos and the KD shaft is moving every time you touch the gas pedal and only in approx a 30 degree angle the shaft coming thru the alloy valve body wears an oval hole, when inspected the movement at the end of the shaft is quite pronounced. I have had the base of the valve body machined back and an oversize stepped bronze bush fitted and with the KD shaft re fitted has eliminated the sideways movement at the top. Also when refitting the valve body into the trans, before tightening up the attaching bolts check that the shaft that comes thru the hsg is central thru the hsg, it is surprising how much movement there is just with the bolts thru the valve body, when viewing from the outside into the KD hole hole it is surprising how they can be up a 1/16" off centre. Lastly, the KD seal that is std- which is a very weak looking seal, i have experimented with the 62-63 727 KD seal, which is a little larger in OD by a few thou and is double ribbed , tighter to get in but seems more effective in oil control with out compromising the KD movement. So all my 59 on trans that are being rebuilt are now getting the modification, and hopefully some dry garage floors when they sit and the converters drain back. Geoff"

And does anyone know the exact diameter on the O ring for the cable or where to get it? I did a whole series of posts about the various locations where Powerflites and Torqueflites leak and some of the solutions to solve the problem(s). (Search "Torqueflite Leak" with my user name to find them all) The one on the Throttle Pressure Shaft Seal (link below the photos) has these photos: REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=76899&... Elite Veteran Posts: 943 | Thanks, much appreciated. I was able to obtain one using the part numbers. Surprised to see Mopar stocking that part
