| What are the positives and negatives of
powder coating?
What are the do’s and dont’s?
Do you lose details, like part numbers etc?
Are the finishes/colors factory correct?
Are there certain parts that should NOT be coated?
Does it hold up to your expectations?
Is it worth the cost over painting?
Generally what are your guys experiences/opinions of powder
coatings VS painting!

Location: McCleary WA | On my convertible I powder coated the hemi valve covers red, and the spark plug covers, air cleaner, and window sills black. The cost was not that much. A word of caution, though - they sand blast the parts first, and getting all of the sand out of the air cleaner was a challenge. When sold 4 years later they all still looked like new. |

Location: So. Cal | Powder coating is very durable and more UV resistant compared to paint. However, if you do get it scrached, and the part sees a lot of water & salt, like on a suspension component, people have reported that corrosion can attack the part underneath the powder coating, causing more severe damage. But if corrosion isn't a big concern for your application, then there aren't a lot of downsides.
It typically isn't as shiny as paint can be - especially compared to a polished clear coat.
You can get a custom color mix of powdercoat. It won't likely be exact, but pretty close.
It does go on thicker, so you can lose some detail.
One big consideration is that it must go over bare metal - no bondo. So metal repairs have to be done perfectly without any kind of filler except brass or lead. |

| I painted my air cleaner with POR15 black and it looks like a powder coat job. Put it on with a brush. Not quite dust free. My fault! I know some people spray POR. Also painted a 904 tranny case (Grey, with a brush) and it looks great.
