hi
I get 10-12 mpg on my 318A, with automatic transmission. Due to carbon buildup and low m.p.g., I wonder if the carb I have is too big for that engine. So, if some of you would let me know what gas mileage you are getting, it would help me know what to expect.
thank you

Fuel mileage depends heavily on other factors that you aren't specifying, like gear ratio, highway vs. surface streets, typical driving speeds etc.

But in my '56 Savoy, when I first got it with the 277 motor in it, I would get 17mpg at 50mph on an empty freeway. I don't remember what the gear ratio was now, but it was stock.

hi
thank you for replying. I drive as gently as possible, to conserve gas, no fast starts, and I drive usually 55 mph on 4 lane highway and 40 mph in town, in order to get the highest gas mileage possible.

I owned or drove several stock, 2bb versions back in the 50's and 60's and generally averaged 14-20 mpg in mixed driving. With today's alcohol laced fuels, and a tired engine, you are probably close to, or a little bit below normal.

hi
thank you for reply. I should have added that my 318A has less than a thousand miles since total rebuild.

If you are driving a steady 55mph for a long period of time, and you get 10-12 mpg, then something is probaby wrong. However, you still haven't told us what rear gear ratio you are running or how many rpms the motor is turning at 55mph. As long as the gear ratio is normal from 2.94 to 3.54, then check your tailpipe emmissions.

Take it to a mechanic with an emissions sniffer and have him run it at speed and at idle to see what is happening. I personally doubt that the size of the carb would be an issue as a 4bbl should work fine on it. It may be a problem with the jets being wrong or with the float set too high, causing the carb to leak into the engine.

thank you, yes it is a 2bbl. I get carbon deposits deposited on the ground so we know it is running rich. Last night I accelerated heavily and drove it at 85 mph. No carbon deposits on the ground.
The other information you suggested I provide: I'll have to get my mechanic's help with that. Thank you for your time to reply.
