I am restoring a 1956 Dodge Custom Royal. I found a hard ( now) rubber (?) gasket between the dash and windscreen rubber as per the attached photos. I presume it has something to do with ventilation. My car never had a heater or AIR CON. I would like to know 1) Is it essential ? 2) does anyone know a source for a repro replacement ?. Mine has become distorted due to time out of the car, and is brittle, so every attempt to get to fit back in place results in a breakage. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Steve.

Steve: I don't have a clue what you have found. I've saved and uploaded the second image (you posted it as a .jpeg that does not automatically show).

In NAmerica we have 303 Brand rubber protectant that will soften rubber given numerous applications.

I'm commenting strictly by guess and based on a smidgen of experience and confidence.

I can't see any "gasket function" and I don't think the part is intended to be soft, only somewhat flexible. I've removed a few of these and the only function I can see is acting as an air diverter for the defroster fan. Even when new, the defrosters were pretty pathetic in cold climates. I recall many times driving Dad's '56 Plymouth while peering thru a few inches of cleared glass with an ice scraper in my hand. There was just too much glass area for the temperature and amount of air provided by the small duct, and the design of the part in question didn't help much. If I lived in the cold north and wanted to drive my '56 in winter, I would leave that part out and modify the duct openings to direct the air in front of the driver and passenger locations.

Based on Gary's comments, I tried searching for that rubber defroster deflector part. I could not find it for the 55-56 Dodge and Plymouths but I did find it as a three part (left, center and right) for the 55-56 Desotos and Chryslers. If your car does not have a defroster fan system, I think that you would be safe to remove it Steve.

Steve: I was thinking (oh no, not that) because your car is a RHD and was basically an export car that used the RHD 55 Plymouth dash that might have ended up in either the UK or Sweden (which didn't switch to LHD until 1967), your basic car might have been equipped with a heater and defroster, except in your case when the car went to Australia or South Africa. In which case, the heater and defroster systems were NOT installed.

But since that might not have been known further up the assembly line, your car (and probably ALL the 1956 Export Dodges) got the rubber defroster deflectors regardless of final destination. (??)

Pure WAG.
