my New Yorker came stock with a AM radio, a speaker in the center of the dash and a speaker in the rear deck. I need to replace the speakers and come up with a music solution. I may just keep the stock AM radio in there and put a 2nd source in the glove box. How does the front dash speaker come out? from up top or down below? What have others used for speakers?
thanks

Personally, I had my AM radio converted to AM/FM/iPod/USBstick/Bluetooth 4 channel stereo.

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=66851&...

As for front speaker, I went with this:

As for your front speaker, these diagrams should help:

I have 1 stock speaker in the back and 1 in the front. Does yours have 2 or 4 speakers?

That's all they ever had for mono AM radio. There are mounting spaces in the rear for stereo speakers, but the other position was only used for the rear window defogger.

I am a bit frugal and did not want to spend $800.00 to do a AM/FM/Bluetooth conversion at this time. I have a couple of 842 radio cores so I took 1 apart and gutted it a bit. Nothing was useable anyway so....
I found a Wuzhi 2 channel B/T, USB, AUX Amp on Amazon for US$16.99 and ordered 2 of them. One if I screwed the first one up. I wired the Power connection into the radio Off/On switch and fastened it to the bottom of the radio. I could have stuck it inside as there is lots of room. Connected the in dash radio speakers (front only at this time) and turned it on. (all on the bench for testing). With a Chinese accent the voice said "Bluetooth Mode). I opened a Music app on my phone and found some 1950's music and hit play. Sounds good. I downloaded a Radio Player app and can listen to any radio station in the world. Then I plugged in a Jump Stick to see if that worked. Yep! Cuts off the Bluetooth and plays. Only dumb think is every time you switch to Bluetooth is starts at the beginning. Never where you left off. I am going to install the #2 amp and hook it up for the USB function. OOPs Spelling ....It is Wuzhi

Phase ll....I have a couple of old L pots that I am planning to put inside the radio box to control the volume on front & rear speakers with the radio volume knob. I also have a fader switch so I can do everything through the radio controls. I will have it all done for less than C$150.00 plus many hours of my time that my wife tells me Isn't worth anything.

Definitely not an electronic wiz, just too cheap to spend the bucks for a conversion when today’s mobile phone technology will give you every radio station in the world an all the music you want.??

For the front, you can mount two small speakers close together in the center of the dash. I've done that before and it sounds better than mono, but not much better because of how close they are to each other. A second better option is to mount them into your kick panels. That's how I would do it.

I mounted two small speakers in my 59's defroster dash grill so that I could have stereo at the front and the rear. Finding sub 4 inch speakers to fit in the same space as the one speaker was tricky. Eventually found some harmon kardon at the picknpull in a Mercedes wagon's rear speakers.

They actually make what you are talking about. I am hoping to do something like this for my front speaker (currently a single 6 x 9 with + on one terminal and - on the other).
I like the twin 4" on a 6 x 9 frame better:

I know that the front radio grill is not a 6x9 speaker and this is what complicated finding a speaker. It is smaller than 6x9 and might be 5x7 or similar (not as easily found used). The rear dash 3 openings are 6x9 (at least for 59 CHRYS/DESOT and likely many other years).

I had seen that frame as well and thought I could make the same thing with used parts and some scrap for under $15 and being smaller than 6x9 I went that route. I have to save money when I can.

In case anyone is curious, here is how I mounted my my 59's dash speakers. Total cost was under $20. I used two 2 inch Harmon Kardon speakers from a Mercedes SUV rear. I had to buy some 12W 6 Ohm resistors to get an impedance of 8, but I could have done some creative speaker wiring to not need to, but this was easier. Only really necessary when running quad sound. My local U-pull charges $5/$10 per speaker for OEM/aftermarket.

Forward lookers, still trying the pull the radio from my Chrysler. I believe i have the 847 model. Manual says I have to pull the ash tray/radio bezel to get radio out. Attached to the radio dash bezel is the heater controls. How does the heater control come off the radio bezel in order for me to get the rest apart? I'm no spring chicken anymore so hanging upside down is not my idea of a good time....any pointers would be appreciated. if I'm not explaining well enough ill post a picture. thanks billy

The heater control assembly is just held to the dash with a couple of bolts. It's a pain to remove though because you likely need to hold the nut on the upper side of the dash.

Does the radio bezel have to come off to get access to radio mounts? Im stuck. i got the heater control assembly off, all the bolts i can find for the radio bezel and what i can find for the radio off but she's still not budging. there is a decorative face plate in front of radio, does that have to come off to expose more mounting radio bolts? Is it safe to assume the bezel has to come out the front and the radio out the back and that the bezel must come off 1st? Any help would be appreciated. thanks billy

It's been a while since I looked at it, but I believe that the control knobs hold the radio to the bezel. So you have to remove the knobs, and unscrew the large nuts underneath them.

I have no idea why you think that the bezel has to come off first. I would have thought that once you pull the two layers of knobs off you are looking at two flat nuts that need to be removed and then something at the bottom of the radio (a bottom bracket that holds the back of the radio up and to the dash). Various wires obviously have to be removed as well.

I certainly can be wrong about this but removing the bezel doesn't seem to show up in the removal/installation instructions (unless I am blind).

I'm reading "remove radio and ash receiver from panel" as the bezel...maybe I'm mistaken, but how do you access the 2 mounting screws in the front face of the radio without removing bezel? I'll keep working on it,,,i must be missing something. The picture is what i have except i have the 847 model with 5 buttons instead of 7. I've taken radios out of countless cars, this one is giving me fits..thanks for the help. billy

There must be somebody on the Forum with a 57 Chrysler who has the answers you need (Nathan?). I am just fumbling around trying help until the real help arrives.

That said, based on the images below and the diagrams above, I think that the top of the bezel is hanging on two little brackets (somewhere ?), i.e. the screws that are concerning you are attached to the back of the bezel and then the bezel is hung on those two brackets. Maybe if you remove the radio tuning/volume knobs and the two screws at the bottom of the bezel, you can pivot the bezel from the bottom and then lift it up to release the two screws from the brackets.

MAYBE

It's easiest to remove the bezel and radio together as a unit first. The whole thing is held on with 2 studs at the top and 2 studs at the bottom, as well as a bracket that the radio itself mounts to. I indicated those attachment points with red circles. Once that is out, you can remove the radio from the bezel by removing the 4 screws holding it on, that I indicated with green circles.

Those bezel attachments aren't easy to access until you remove the heater controls.

Nathan has the right idea - the radio comes out with the bezel.

As for speakers, I kept the defroster intake in the passenger-side location and just added a central speaker using an extra bezel from a parts car. The hole was already there in the parcel shelf so I just took advantage of it! It's kinda-stereo now; one on the left and one in the middle. Sounds fine to me, I am not much of an audiophile.

Thanks guys for your help. Its out and I didn't use a saws-all....although it was close....Now to upgrade the radio and speakers..Danny i like the idea of just adding speaker to center so i can keep rear defroster as it was. Have others done the stock radio upgrade to keep it looking stock but adding new technology guts? thanks billy

Billy: Can you post some more photos and maybe some comments about what you actually had to do to get the radio bezel off the dash? It will help somebody else in the future. (Play it forward - in this case, Forward Look )

As for upgrades, I don't know what hemidenis does but I had my ElectroTouch Tuning ("Town and Country") converted to AM/FM, Bluetooth, iPod and USB capable using Aurora Designs modules.

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=66851&...

Only that little LED light tells you that it's not stock anymore Toto
