I’ve got a 1957 Dodge D500 and am refreshing the original 325 double-rocker engine, including cleaning and painting the engine and engine compartment. What color were the metal parts of the engine mounts painted? Black, like the frame? Silver like the engine? On most cars, it depends on what part they were attached to on the assembly line, when THAT part was painted. Thanks in advance for any information you can give.

I know that on the chryslers, that they were painted silver with the motor. I believe that Dodge was the same.

All the engine mounts I have are black. Probably semi-gloss black. Faded like these: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=35637 Pics from the 'net': black generator brackets. Marc.

All my Chrysler generator brackets are also painted silver. But my one '58 Dodge motor has a black generator bracket. Unfortunately, it's mounts are too dirty/rusty to tell what they were. But it looks like Dodge may have painted them differently than Chrysler.

Based on Youtube videos of the 1955/56 Mopar era, I would say that the engines were painted silver after they were tested.

As for the mounts, based on my 56 Dodge 315 hemi (basically the same a a 57 325 hemi), the motor mounts were likely originally semi-gloss black.

Here are two examples, one set that I bought off eBay and one set that Dave N. (DepsilonD) has.

Most of the black-painted parts were a low-level gloss and were dipped, not sprayed.

Silver, engine and transmission was complete when painted for 1947, only parts not on engine were plug wires and fan belts , there were covers that went over the spark plugs, carburetor, distributor ect when being painted.

Sorry yes 1957 all painted silver, 1958 the transmission was left natural only bell housing and converter was on engine at time of painting, engine mounts are a dark grey colour for 58.

I see black generator brackets. What color are the pulleys? They don't look silver or black. Bare metal? This paint scheme is quite different from what Chrysler used.

They are bare steel on water pump, bottom pulley is painted silver, in this picture the engines are complete, you can see the cover over the oil filter , spark plugs and valve covers, generators are fitted .
