Last week, after discovering that the throttle linkage on my 56 D500 4 bbl was not fully opening, I decided to adjust the idle air while I had the air cleaner off. Those screws are at the front of the Carter WCFB on my car. Easy enough. One screw was way too far out (probably permitting too much air into the carb at idle)

As a result of adjusting the idle air, "suddenly" the idle speed became too low. I expected the idle speed screw to be at the front side of the carb but it was not. Since I had other family commitments, I had to put the car away in the garage (it had been out on the street when I made the idle air adjustment(s)). That was a struggle because the engine wanted to keep dieing on me and I couldn't find the adjustment screw. Eventually, I got it back in the garage but then I had to leave it for a few days.

When I got back to it (today), I did find the idle speed adjustment screw but it is very hidden and difficult to get a screw driver on it. I did but I probably need a shorter wide flat blade screw driver because the one I tried was too long to get in there easily. Since I could feel that the head of the speed adjustment screw was a hex, I then tried a 1/4" nut driver and that sort of worked. But the nut driver was a bit too short to get a good twist on the adjustment screw.

There must be a better tool than either the too long flat blade or the too short nut driver.

Suggestions? I thought that the idle adjustment screw would be a) visible and b) easy to adjust. Wrong on both counts. I think that its location is a design problem.

I could not (and CAN NOT) see the screw but my camera could try (so multiple shots below):

Can't you get a 1/4" end wrench on it?

There are flexible handle tools with interchangeable adapters that will do the job, very common easy to find online.

Absolutely not. Even a 1/4" deep socket and rachet is difficult

I think my neighbour has one of those and I was going to borrow it but he was out.

So I tried the "screw driver" handle with a 1/4" square drive end from my socket set and a short 1/4" hex/1/4" drive socket and that worked better than my dedicated 1/4" nut driver that I was trying yesterday.

I guess I need to look for one of these puppies:

My favorite one of those also has a 1/4" drive socket at the end of the handle so you can attach a ratchet to it for those stubborn little devils.

Ended up buying this one (below). Got a bit suckered. The on-line version shows a 1/4" square drive and two sockets (1/4" and 5/16"). The actual one that was in the store (last one) has a 1/4" hex male drive and a 1/4"-5/16" flip socket. I tried it on hose clamps (5/16" hex) and it worked fine. I presume that the 1/4" female socket end will work on the carburetor idle screw.

I will probably keep looking for one with 1/4" square drive tip and the 1/4" female receiver at the butt end (like Nathan suggested). Maybe Harbor Freight?

I'm surprised that it's so difficult to reach. Here's a 55 Desoto WCFB 2210S. This is the senior model 4 bbl carb with the secondary vacuum pull-off, which you can see in the back. Both idle and fast idle screws are pretty easy to access.

I am not home now to look at my WCFB on my 315 poly but I know all adjustments are not that easy to get at , very similar to Ron’s Desoto.

Looking at Dave’s photos, I would agree the Air adjustments are a mechanics nightmare particularly when the engine is hot but, that’s the way it is/was. Perseverance and patience along with the odd explicit will get it done.

I wish.

On two counts:

1. Vacuum Secondaries (mine are mechanical and I believe never utilized during my 7 years of ownership - but THAT is another story)
2. Easy to adjust. As you can see from the photos below of my eBay 2443S that I just took (10 min ago), while the fast idle adjustment screw is accessible from the front, the idle speed adjustment screw is only accessible from the rear under lots of springs and levers, etc. No fun. Bad design in my opinion.

By the way, I was suckered by MTSC video on the "new" Carter WCFB carbs (Jan. 1955) and this particular image showing the idle speed adjustment screw right at the front, where it makes sense.

Here is a photo that '55-3Hemi posted regarding PCV valves showing his WCFB. I had NOT noticed before but just now I see that his carb has the same idle speed adjustment screw issue (facing to the rear) that mine does.

So it isn't just me.

That said, access to his adjustment screw seems way easier/less hidden than mine for some reason. (???)
