Based on a recent thread regarding alternatives for a 56 Dodge front anti-sway ("Sway-Elminator") bar, and previously posted info (some by me, some by others), I thought that I would consolidate the information in a new searchable post dealing with the 1955 and 1956 Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler cars and their front bars.

Basically there were three chassis sizes in 1955-56:

1. The 115" wheelbase Plymouths and the Plymouth-based Canadian and export Dodges (aka "Plodges")
2. The 120" wheelbase American Dodges (which were sometimes also exported, e.g. Steve B's RHD Custom Royal in Australia)
3. The 126" wheelbase Desotos and Chryslers

Each chassis used its own Sway-eliminator bar which, due to the increasing weight of the cars, also meant that the diameter of the anti-sway bars also increased.

The 55-56 Plymouths (P28 and P29 Plazas, Savoys and Belvederes) and the Canadian and Export Plodges (D60 and D61 Crusaders, Kingsways and Regents and D61-3 Mayfairs) all used the smallest bars, the 1556 225 which had a diameter of 3/4" (12/16")(0.75") (Probably needs confirmation from a 55/56 Plymouth or Plodge owner)(Nathan??)

The 55-56 American Dodges and "Heavy Duty" Plymouths (e.g. taxis and maybe the 56 Fury??) used a medium-diameter bar, PN 1630 185 with a 13/16" (0.8125") diameter.

The 55 Desotos and Chryslers used a PN 1554 884 bar. I am guessing that this bar was 13/16" based on the use of the same 1554 747 rubber bushing "Cushion" as the 56 Plymouth "Heavy Duty" and the 55-56 American Dodges - which Nathan pointed out in an older post.

The 56 Desotos and Chryslers (perhaps with some exceptions) used the largest size bar, the 7/8"(14/16") (0.875") diameter bar, PN 1639 165. The full-on 56 Dodge D500s and D500-1s (race chassis) also used this same 7/8" bar. The mid-May 56 Dodge D500 "Specials" utilized the normal 56 Dodge suspension and therefore the 13/16" (0.8125") diameter bar (my 56D500 has this medium-sized bar - I just remeasured it with a Vernier caliper to confirm)

Thanks Nathan, for the size confirmations you just posted in the recent Anti-Sway bar thread:

Powerflite - 2022-11-17 5:21 PM

'55-'56 Plymouth: 3/4"
Canadian '55-'56 Plodge: 3/4"
Heavy duty '55-'56 Plymouth/Plodge (Fury, Police, Taxi): 13/16"
'55-'56 Dodge: 13/16"
'55 DeSoto/Chrysler/Imperial: 13/16"
'56 DeSoto/Chrysler/Imperial: 7/8"

I think, between the two of us, we have it covered now.

Found these photos of JerseyBob's (Bob A's) 56 Dodge 6 cylinder flat head tear down showing the sway bar (perhaps 3/4" ??) and that nasty rear sway bar bracket mount bolt that requires the rear-most bumper bracket bolt be removed first, to gain access to the rear-most sway bar bracket bolt.

UPDATE: Bob A. got back to me (I emailed him). The bar on his wagon is 13/16", i.e. the normal 56 Dodge V8 bar (which makes sense as a wagon, even with a 6 cyl)
