Looking into doing a conversion on our 57 Dodge Suburban from a factory installed manual steering system to a factory power steering system that my Moms cousin had gotten when he had owned the wagon. I noticed that the horn wire comes out through hte center of the steering shaft in the manual steering car and seems to come in on the side of the shaft on the power steering column. Will we need a different steering wheel that has a different horn contact on it?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Hi Brian. Yep! You need a different steering wheel or the different contact ring. My car is a 56 with the Coaxial Steering. I don’t have my parts book handy but I would suspect the 57 would be very similar. You will notice on the steering column there is a small contact wheel that rolls on the contact ring that is a fixed to the under side of the centre of the steering wheel. A wire attached to that contact ring come up through a hole in the steering wheel that will connect to the horn ring. Clear as mud so far? A single wire that connect the contact wheel runs down along side the steering shaft and exits through the side of the steering column. I will attempt to attach a couple of photos tonight. I that fails I will do it in the morning.

Ok, so I'll just have to try and find that contact ring then as our steering wheel is in pristine condtion and not cracked at all.

I can’t remember if our steering wheel had that copper horn ring on it or not. I seem to recall it just having a wire come up through the center of the steering shaft and then connect to the horn button.

the connection is different.

Actually, transmissions are showing different wheels... manual and auto.

But in 57-58 they are the same.
