I have no idea about the 1958 DeSoto/Chrysler with the (constant control type) steering gear, so I have a question from an learner.

Does anyone have an idea how to swap a 57 steering gear (coaxial type) for a 58 steering gear (constant control type)? I don't mean "hey loosen the three screws and thats it" - I mean what extra parts are needed in a '57 car in which installing a '58 steering gear. By checking my picture archive I discover a tube (see picture) which is clamped on the constant control type steering gear. Are there some further parts which I have to hunt on ebay?

It looks as it is an big gab between steering wheel and the new 58 box

You'll need to swap the whole steering column and use the '58 rubber firewall seal because the tube & shaft for the steering column is a lot longer on the '58 versus the '57. However, I don't really recommend doing this. I've found the '57 gear to be lighter weight and I get better reliability out of them than the '58 version. I like the '57 version better.

thanks Nathan

somebody told me the 58 steering gear is much better,- that was the initial to find a 58 steering gear . The found 58 steering gear was now overhault while the old 57 steering gear is still in the car...........

possibly wrong advice...

would probably have been better to look for a 57 gear right away

Their advice may have had to do with trying to get rebuild parts for them. I've never had to rebuild a '57 box, but I've had to rebuild 2 '58 boxes, and I have less of those cars.
