Expert 5K+ Posts: 9899      Location: Lower Mainland BC | . This is on the engine in my NOS guy's 55 Dodge Custom Royal Convertible. The engine is the 1955 270 double rocker ("hemi") with a 1954 Dodge Indy Pace car factory Offenhauser intake and Carter WCFB 4 bbl carb. He apparently scored the manifold and carb at a swap meet in Turlock CA years ago. He nabbed it and almost lost it to someone who questioned whether my guy knew what he had. Apparently my guy calmly said "Why yes I do" (while smiling like a cat who had just discovered a dish of cream) and walked away with his "prize" (after he paid the vendor). I have never seen a pancake-type filter like this but my guy says that they were OE for that carb. He pointed out the drain hole (with the hex head machine screw) that was used to drain off crap and debris (and maybe water??). I would like to find out more about the filter and how it worked. Last night, I took my original (not downsized) photo and zoomed in on the filter. It says "Moraine Gasoline Filter". So then I googled that name and came up with a few photos of both the sealed version that is on that "54 Pace Car" WCFB 4bbl and another version that could be taken apart and the filter element changed. In all cases, they seemed to be GM Delco Moraine (see photos below). I wonder whether the 54 Dodge Indy Pace cars used GM-based Carter WCFBs (think Buick or maybe Olds) because, at that point, there had only been 2 bbl 241 Dodge Hemi engines. That was why the 701 or so Indy Pace cars used aluminum intake manifolds made by Offenhauser - there were no factory cast iron Dodge 4bbl manifolds yet. I don't know which Mopar was the first to have a 4 bbl WCFB, maybe it was the 54 Pace car and there was nothing on the Hamtrackt factory shelves to be "borrowed" for use on the Pace car. ??? So far I am not giving up trying to figure out whether having a GM Moraine fuel filter on the 54 Pace car's WCFB meant that the carb was sourced from a Buick application. I determined, from two sources that there was a 4 bbl Chrysler 331 in 1954, but that carb would have been too big for a 1954 241 Dodge V8 so the Buick source might not be wrong. Going back to the Moraine filter, I did find photos in my electronic files that show the Moraine filter on the 54 Pace Car. Found this just now (now I am looking for a early 50's Carter WCFB rated at 450 cfm ): "The ’54 Dodge retains all the original factory equipment specified for pace car duty. That starts with a significant upgrade under the hood in the form of a 241 cubic-inch Hemi V-8. Dodge fitted pace cars with the first four-barrel carburetor used on the recently introduced “Red Ram” Hemi engine. The Carter 450 cfm (cubic feet per minute) unit added 20 horsepower, boosting output to 170 ponies. However, because Dodge didn’t have a suitable intake manifold, all pace cars used an aluminum unit from Offenhauser, the legendary California speed shop. I found a cfm calculator and a 241 cu in engine running at 5200 RPM max and 85% efficiency (a bit higher than the normal 80% for a stock engine to allow for hemi breathing benefits) would only need about 310 cfm, i.e. 450 cfm seems too high for the little 241. A 1954 Buick Series 60-70 , Model 100, 322 cu in V8, at 5200 RPM and 80% efficiency would need about 390 cfm (still not 450 cfm). This: https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/carburetor-cfm So I went back to the adjustment chart and noted the similarities between the 1954 Buick WCFB and the 1954 Dodge WCFB (presumably the Pace Car carb). Quite similar. Not proof but NOT denial either. More circumstantial evidence: The larger 1954 Buicks with the 322 V8 used the Carter 2082S WFCB (see listing below) The 1954 Dodge Royals (top of the line in 1954, above Coronet and Meadowbrook) were designated D53-3s, according the Jon Robinson on pg. 121 of his book "Standard Catalog of 1950's Chrysler" regarding the 1954 Dodges. The listing for Carter carburetor jets at https://www.carburetor-blog.com/knowledge-base/carter-wcfb-carbureto... lists the 2082S WCFB as a D53-3 carburetor, i.e. since the only 4 bbl Dodges in 1954 were the 701 odd Pace Cars, the Pace Cars seem to have used the same carburetor as the 1954 Buicks. This leads towards the use of the GM Delco Moraine Gasoline Filter on the 1954 Dodge Pace Cars over the Carter glass bowl ceramic fuel filters that were used later. Again, circumstantial, but, perhaps, compelling evidence.
