I didn't realize '57 Mercs had push button trannys.  I learn something important every day.

Adding to your knowledge base (learning something new everyday), so did the 1958 Edsel with its Teletouch shift buttons
in the middle of the steering wheel. A neighbour had one when I was a kid (7?) I remember that distinctly.

that stupid idea of putting it on the steering wheel... the repairs were insane... and constant.

Well, I remembered the Edsel with its steering wheel push buttons.  It was problematic and didn't last long. It's kind'a like the paddle shifters of today.  If you're on a windy road making multiple shifts up & down, it's pretty difficult to keep your hands on them - - - as the wheel is twisting back and forth.  Better to just keep one hand on the wheel and the other on the console shift lever.  DOH!

I took a hiatus from the Chrysler bench and went to a Ford dealership for a SHORT PERIOD. Short because, I had an Edsel in my stall, left it running in Neutral, it popped into reverse, backed out of the stall out through the shop door, across the street and stopped agains the curb without hitting anything. The shop foreman thought I should work some place else. That was an issue with that steering wheel push button shifter. I went back to my job in the Chrysler dealership. End of story.

Location: Palm Beach County Florida		Prior to getting my driver license in 1963, I made a bargain with my father that I would wash his 1959 Belvedere every week He agreed that it was OK for me to drive it out to the street and then back to the garage after the wash. It went well for weeks until on one occasion, my youngest brother left his tricycle in front of the garage. I stopped the Plymouth, punched the N button, and set the hand brake. I had to get out the right side door to move the tricycle because there was hedge on the left side of the driveway. Well, the Plymouth slipped into reverse and rolled back down the driveway since the hand brake was soaked with transmission oil from the leaking rear seal. Luckily, the open right front door caught on the back of the house and prevented a run-a-way. I got blamed for my dad's neglected maintenance and my brother's carelessness.
