Question: Was there a standard colour for the battery caps on 1956 Group 24 batteries. I believe the batteries were Willard but I don’t ever remember paying any attention to the cap colours. Batteries were replaced with whatever was available I may buy a Tar Top topper to disguise my new sealed battery. I have searched for an answer with little success.

I happen to stumble across some pictures of 1956 year model engines in various show mopars and from what I gathered, the battery caps were green on the 24 group batteries and red on the 27 group.

I do know from personal experience that the battery toppers look fantastic and are cheap. This is a picture from my '59 DeSoto and you can't really tell it's a topper.

Any chance that you can post some of those 56 model year engine bay photos? It would be great to have them archived here for future reference.

I think I asked about cap colours when I contacted Tar Toppers last year and they said green was correct (for Group 24). That is what I bought.

Here are my before and after photos:

I’m not good at transposing pictures. Google 1956 Chrysler and select view all images and just scroll through. You’ll eventually see some engine compartment pictures. Do the same for Dodge and DeSoto.

If you find one that you think is correct, just right click on it and select COPY LINK and post the link here. I can do the rest

So far all that I have found is from an original 300B brochure which shows an engine bay illustration with red caps on what should be a Group 27 battery.

Green it is! That’s what I will go with.
Thanks, Del

This was my solution, looked kind of ok, but I had to make larger threads in the battery.
It's original Mopar and Cryco caps.

Difficult to say, while looking at period photos from 1957-1961 there are differences even with same year/makes. I have a 1957 photo from a service training video and the battery is an Auto-lite, which was the supplier for many of the electrical parts. I haven’t studied pre-1957 model year photos though. With this phone I can’t unload photos here

I ordered a Tar Topper from Scott today, green caps. US$20.50 plus $9.00 shipping. There are others on eBay & Mopar Mall for around $60.00. Yikes!
