Found this on eBay this AM. It was cheap ($10 plus shipping) on eBay so I snagged it. The deal was done and paid for and *THEN* I noticed this, from the seller:

"1954-1956 Dodge Imperial single action fuel pump kit vintage. Rubber looks good, I’ve priced it cheap because I don’t know if it’s complete"

Looks fairly complete to me. What might be missing?

I might use the kit to rebuild the fuel pump that came on my car back in Sept 2016:

2 springs. You probably can reuse the springs that are now in the fuel pump.

Since I made my first post (above), I've watched a few Youtube videos on the repair and realized that this $10 kit is missing the big diaphragm spring and the smaller lever arm return spring.

As you suggest, I will have to hope to be able to reuse the existing springs.

I have to hope that the diaphragms and the valves are indeed NOS and not used put back in NORS box. Interesting that the box indicates that the diaphragms are made from Neoprene rubber.

Neoprene was the material of the day. Not good with today’s ethanol blends.

Picked up my US$10 (plus USPS) Fuel Pump repair kit today. As suspected no springs. But I think the original diaphragm spring and the rocker arm springs will be okay.

Started to take my original (to me) fuel pump a part to check things. I think that it will all be good. The valves look identical to what is in there now. The bottom gasket/membrane was totally rock hard and crumbly. The new one should take care of that issue.

I only got so far (all the screws out) and then I noticed that the pin through the pivot arm is strange. Looks like a roll pin with a rivet head at the other end. It might be held in place be two strange washers.

I don't have a clue as how to remove it other than trying to remove the washers and then compressing the gap in the pin and tapping the pin towards the other end.

Comments/hints welcomed. (Thanks)

Everything is soaking in solvent at the moment.

It's a bad idea to use a vintage kit to repair a fuel pump. The materials are not designed for our modern fuels and will fail prematurely. Better, actually much better, idea is to buy a kit from Then and Now, which is made from modern materials.

Not to worry. I have several back-up fuel pumps already on the shelf including a new Airtex 4280 that will have modern materials inside.

I tend to run Chevron 94 which, up here, has no Ethanol in it.

I consider this US$10 kit just a learning experience. I've watched Youtube DIYs and now I am going try it for real with this kit.

I will run it to test it, with Chevron 94, and, if it works, I will replace it with the one that I am running now (and have been running since 2016) and put the "rejuvenated" one on the shelf until it is needed. I like to have spares for my spares (so I still have a spare when Spare No.1 is required).

In the meantime, I will probably order a Carter Kit from Then and Now and kit if it is available.

Just checked Then and Now. I don't see a kit that looks like what I have, at least on that lower gasket/membrane. My did not have the opening like these ones do. Maybe what I have is NOT a Carter. ???

Look at AC Delco on Then & Now to see if an ACD mit looks similar.

Check the bottom of the fuel pump. It would say if it was a Carter.

Then and Now has no kits for AC Delco and will not rebuild them.

There are absolutely NO markings on the plate on this "trial" rebuild pump. Nothing.

The only markings on the outside are "IN" and MADE IN USA.

Inside, there is a casting of "FP792". This must mean something but I Googled that and got nothing relevant in return.

I figured out how to remove the lever pin: It had been "Staked" in place by opening up the end so it jammed against those two little washers. The trick to remove it was to use pliers to squeeze the open end a bit to close the split and then manhandling the washers off. Once they were off, I just used a drift pin and hammer with the pump on the vice (opened about 3/4") to push the pin out.

Turns out that the other end of the pin was knurled a bit to help hold it in place. Looks sort of like a door hinge pin. (??)

What was real surprising was when the pin came out, the lever arm fell out. Well not all of the lever arm, just a long bit. Turns out the lever arm on this pump was two piece with the shorter bit the one that hooks onto the rod on the pump diaphragm. I didn't take notes when I removed this shorter bit so I will have to figure things out:

Option 1: Hook Up

Option 2: Hook Down (I don't think so, you can see "Ghost" Witness marks that point to Option 1)

I will figure it out. (Eventually )

Reassembly will be like a Chinese Puzzle (which I hate) getting things hooked and aligned, etc

I might have to come up with an alternative lever pin arrangement, e.g. hole drilled through the side of the open end of the pin, a washer or two and a small spring clip/pin (??).

Why would that little hook arm need to rotate? Why wouldn't they make it all from one piece?

Makes no sense to me but there it is.

If you call Then and Now give them the FP792 inside number.
I had the same problem, no external numbers, they told me to open the pump and look for the numbers inside which I did and they sent me the correct kit.

Something like this Dorman door hinge kit seems to be a potential candidate for a new fuel pump pivot pin. I am liking the "C" clip that slips into the groove at the end of the shaft.

Trick will be to find a pin that is the right diameter and at least long enough to allow a groove to be cut for the "C" clip.
