Regular Posts: 59 | Hi, Group Top of this piston looks very oily and with heavy carbon build up. I’m pretty sure the plug fires… All plugs along this bank had oil on them but only this piston looked like this. The others are dry and of a brownish color. I have not pulled the left bank plugs yet… Could it be the spark plug tubes aren’t sealing? I don’t think there’s supposed to be any rubber down there… any observations would be appreciated. Thanks. Regular Posts: 59 | Thanks, guys All very helpful. Really appreciate it! I’ll run a compression check to rule out/in the rings. It sometimes diesels. I understand this build up can act as a glow plug… The engine that came with the car is at the machine shop for evaluation — either way, I have a fun project ahead of me.

Leak down was 18% on 1 cylinder on each bank. Once apart the rings almost fell off the pistons, they had no tension at that point.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | The video that Dave posted goes on to explain DUAL POINTS and how they work and why you have dual points. It also shows how to change points and set the gaps. There was talk several years ago about a distributor gasket and most people said they didn't use a gasket on the distributor. I've looked in the service manual and the parts manual to try to see if there was a distributor gasket and could never find any reference to a distributor gasket. But in this video, it talks about and shows the distributor o ring type seal. This is very interesting to me because I've had some leaking back there and couldn't figure out what to do about it. So now I know something to look into. Thanks Dave. Amazing timing on the posting of this video for me.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | More on the video. This video covers the exact engine I have except I have poly heads instead of hemi heads. This one video tells me almost everything I need to know about my engine. I wish I would have seen it sooner. Very helpful video. This video covers the three motor mount set up, oil change intervals, hydraulic tappet operation, generator belt tightening, spark plug installation, dual point operation and how to replace the points by pulling the distributor, how to set the timing, how to adjust the carburetor. Just a great video
